I feel that we owe our tolerance to the people we are trying to help in afganistan, not the leaders they already have who make their lives hellish enough to drive them to radical ways

What is wrong with the Army for planning to discharge him. I say give him a medal as he only did what was right. It is really bad when governments protect miserable human beings like the rapist and take away the job of a guy who did what was right. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD????? THEY NEED GOD!!!!!!!!!

My thanks to SFC Martland for standing up for the helpless, and for his service to our country.

Sgt. Martland should be praised instead of punished for his role in protecting helpless civilian victims in Afganistan. If American soldier s are prevented from standing against evil like child rape, what other kinds of repugnant behavior should they also tolerate?

The Army's reason that it was part of culture that permits rape by the local authorities on the people they are supposed to be protecting is a contradiction to their troops mission. I also can't imagine that is how you get the local support of the populace of the authority if this is allowed. I can't imagine any parent from any culture feel that is okay for the powers to be to take their child and rape them.

We need to show that we will not tolerate punishing good people for standing up for what is right!

Seriously, discharge for doing the right thing. Ok Mr Secretary, slap his hand in public and thank him in private.

Whoever was responsible for Martland's discharge should be sacked.

I've been disgusted over many issues the past 6 1/2 years, this is only one of the many. This administration is responsible for inspiring hatred among races and hatred for and the killing of police officers, why not the ruination of a man's future and reputation.

How is defending the weak and innocent a reason for discharge?!?! If he was one of mine, I would have done everything in my power to see him PROMOTED! (Retired E-9)

This is why we are hated around the world - we stand for nothing, if we allow things like this to happen. Evil is evil, plain and simple. Charles did the RIGHT THING!

This is an example of Government gone a muck. It is an another example of governmental ego-eccentric behavior.

As a former military wife and mother of two children that have served in the military I applaud their action and am greatly disturbed by this. Would these decision makers do nothing if it were their child or loved one suffering this horrific abuse? I think not.

If a military member can be treated like this then I submit we have big problems. If a military member has to step back and question whether or not honorable actions will be punished then we have no choice but to lay blame at the feet of brass. This is wrong - pure and simple.
