Class of '80. I am ashamed of my alma mater. This should not have been a difficult decision at all. Charlie Rose is not worthy of honor. Revoke the honorary degree!

I would urge the Regents to rescind Charlie Rose’s honorary degree. The letter from the faculty of the School of Theology aptly explains why the honor should be rescinded.

I am horrified and deeply ashamed at the administration's refusal to revoke Charlie Rose's degree. This is not the alma mater I remember and love. There must be condemnation of injustice and abuse. EQB. #speakupsewanee

For all those who love Sewanee dearly, our heart aches when we see that Sewanee’s honor has been placed in a wrong place. It is a wrong place to award Sewanee’s prestigious honorary degree on Mr. Rose’s head. Please take Sewanee’s honor back.

Imagine if McCardell had responded like this:
“I was deeply disturbed by and profoundly disappointed to hear the recent accusations made against Charlie Rose, who received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from SUNY Oswego in the fall of 2014. These are credible allegations of predatory sexual harassment that completely conflict with the core values of our institution and significantly degrade the achievements that were the basis for awarding him an honorary degree," Stanley said in a statement.
"We are compelled to commend the eight women who have bravely made these charges known and condemn the character exhibited by Mr. Rose, which is unequivocally reprehensible and indefensible. On behalf of SUNY Oswego, I will correspond with the Trustees of the State University of New York to discuss a path forward in regard to the status of Mr. Rose's honorary degree."

Revoke the honorary degree! Do you find that a man, by his own admission, used his position of power to sexually abuse/assault women to man of honor??? If you do, this is no longer the university that I loved and was proud to have attended.

This is the perfect opportunity to figure out how to revoke an honorary degree. (Hint: Ask ASU, Fordham, Oswego State, Duke, or the University of Kansas for help.) Let's do the right thing. YSR, EQB

Class of 2015 alumna and former staff member. This is not my Sewanee. My Sewanee is the students, faculty, staff and alumni. The school administration does not speak for us.

If we “don’t have a mechanism” for revoking an honorary degree, I suggest we get busy building one - the sooner the better.

Current alumna. Former proud student of Sewanee. Emphasis on "former". Should the Board of Regents and Vice Chancellor fail to correct their mistake, they only prove themselves to be against the university's mission and should resign accordingly.
