MURAL IN GERMANTOWN AT RISK OF BEING ERASED!

The mural is located at Divine Beauty School 5524 Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. (on the corner of Germantown Avenue and Armat Street)

In 2008, the mural "Seeing Our Voices, Signs of Germantown" was created to capture the Deaf and hearing community in Germantown. The mural was supported by the Mural Arts Program and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. The images shown represent the people in the neighborhood and their connections to one another. The mural has been affected by the harsh winter and is need of serious repair.

If action is not taken, the wall will be completely painted over with white paint!

The Mural Arts Program wants to repair the wall but the wall owner refuses to care and respect the mural that was created intitially with her permission and the involvement of the community.

Without the wall owner's committment to preserving the mural, the wall will be completely painted over with white paint. The hard work of the artists and most importantly the messages collected and images of the community will be erased.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO KEEP THE MURAL!

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION AND SPREAD THE WORD TO THE COMMUNITY!

I was walking past the wall earlier and kept thinking about how much life is etched into that plaster because it really is more than just paint to the people who live here. The owner still has not responded to my messages but I am trying to find a time to sit down with her because maybe she just does not understand what this means to our neighborhood.

I was looking at the corner of Germantown and Armat today and it honestly hit me how much space this mural takes up in our actual lives. It is wild to see so many people backing this project because that wall represents way more than just paint and when I think about all the faces pictured there I just know we have to keep fighting.

This mural is right next to the school that I used to go to and I always walked by it on the way to the bus. Losing it would be very sad.
