Seattle's New LED Streetlights are Unpleasant

I'm concerned about light pollution and I support energy-saving solutions for public lighting but I am even more concerned about the impaired visibility and other safety issues caused by these overly bright, high-glare LED streetlights.

Please address this issue. Otherwise sensible people are getting riled up about this. The community needs to be happy, whatever that takes it is what we should strive for.

I am the starter of this petition. If you want your streetlight shaded, Contact Seattle City Light Streetlight Response Team (206) 684-7056. I don't know what their current email is. I had contacted : [email protected] It took three tries, but, finally, my house and yard are bathed in dark.

I was signer number 100 and hope to get more from the Mt. Baker/Leschi area where City Light Bombed us with way too bright lights. Hope to get some turned down or shielded or otherwise adjusted so as to not light up my bedrooms, patio and decks. Where can we sit out in pleasant twilight ( and who is hiding there in the now stark shadows.?)

In many areas overly bright have ruined the block watch success. The lights are so bright that people pull the curtains and now do not see the drug deals and such..In fact the bright lights help the bad guys do,their deals, they do it under the lights....

I live at 120 NW 39th St in Fremont and we've lost a ton of sleep due to the installation of these lights. This can't be good for our health.

These lights have recently be installed on the utility pole in front of our house. Even with blinds fully down, our bedroom is bright enough we clearly see everything in the room at night.

We are having the same problem in Houston. More is not necessarily better for the best visibility at night. Please consult with lighting engineers who are familiar with the particular characteristics of LEDs and possibly consider the new Cree RSW line of LED street lights which were designed to address complaints such as these.

These lights are too bright! I've had to buy blackout curtains to be able to sleep. They also block the stars. They are most definitely not an improvement.

These are terrible. There's not a room in the house that doesn't get shadows cast from fixtures thirty yards away. I can't see anything but LIGHTS when I walk down the street. I can't see anything but flckering shadows at street corners when I'm driving - it certainly doesn't increase pedestrian visibility.

These new LED lights are so blindingly bright I now have to put my sun visor down on my car while driving at night. This feels very dangerous and I am afraid I will miss seeing a pedestrian or animal and hit one or both. I want to be able to see the stars at night, not just these obnoxious blue lights. I now have to use double layers of blackout curtains on my bedroom windows so I can sleep. Take them away!

Driving at night I've noticed pedestrians seem so hard to see lately in areas lit with the new LED's. Our eyes adjust, pupils dilate, to the bright LED's making objects and persons out of the direct light nearly disappear. The amber light seems to diffuse softly making accurate visibility farther afield. The prison yard white lights in my neighborhood are not friendly and warm, do not make me feel safer. In Hawaii the street lights are yellow/orange to not interfere with the telescopes. The blue white lights are also know to interfere melatonin production, good sleep. We know we have night migrating species of birds through the city, were any studies done on what effect these lights have on them? How much cost savings is actually achieved when factoring in the cost of the tossed sodium bulbs, and the cost of the labor to install the new Gotham lights?

Merry Christmas on 110th ST! The whole family could not sleep as the new street light illuminated the entire house and even lit up the backyard. All the houses are on a hill so that the streetlights are actually below you at eye level while in your own home. We had to put sunglasses on just to walk across the house. We are literally blinded by these lights inside our own home. Bad on who ever thought this was a good idea to save some bucks. Please give your address and lets install them outside of your homes!

Dim lights at night are good for health, wild life etc. though darkness is better for a glimpse of the night sky and healthy sleep. I was horrified to see the harsh white glare blasting through our bedroom windows. Will the city now provide nontoxic blackout shades to all residents who have and will be subjected to this new travesty of bad illumination?? ( FYI: It's Impossible to find nontoxic / environmentally friendly blackout material). The old street light was still too much but at least it was a warm color. I would welcome a few target happy bb toting teens practicing on these travesties. Please replace immediately. This SUCKS!
