Because things needs to change here in SD. The cost of living is outrageous!

San Diego need a COLA. Family of 5 here and we live pay check to pay check sometimes in the negative. I am unable to work at the moment due to heal reasons as well. Base pay is next to nothing and BAH here is a joke.

We can barely afford to live here with our BAH and are always stressed out over money because everything is so expensive here. Plus we don't live in the best area. There was a shooting right outside our 800 sq ft apartment. But that's all we can afford. The cost of living is a stress on everyone.

The need for a COLA increase in Housing was driven home to me, literally, when my Navy son's family recently stationed in San Diego... the first time in over 17 years!
My supportive task was to drive the whole of San Diego County, to look for:
1. "in budget" housing
2. ...in a great school district...
3. hopefully not over half an hour drive from his duty station near downtown San Diego.
I live near Camp Pendleton and was hopeful of finding homes halfway between, to FINALLY be able to be a "hands on" Gramma!
Nope!! NOTHING! NO Housing to the north, yet close enough to base (within a half-hour commute) and of family size, within their Housing Budget Allowance!
They are now living almost all the way to Tijuana, putting them at one end of San Diego County, and me on the other!
So... yet again, I will miss most Baseball Games, Track Meets, Swim Competitions, and other activities in which my teen grandkids will take part. While I AM thankful that we are less than two hours away from each other (depending on traffic!), that we are closer than we have EVER been, finally on the SAME coast (and in the same country) AND that I will be able to attend SOME grandkids' activities without buying a plane ticket, a better housing allowance would have enabled us to truly be a closer family, and allowed me to be greater support to them...
<< sigh! >> ...one more situation where we, as a family with military members, must be grateful for the positives of our situation, finding the silver linings, not dwelling on the dark clouds.
Would it be too much to ask, though, for a "silver lining" in the guise of a COLA in Housing?
...could have made a BIG difference in the next 17 months of THIS Gramma and her Teen Grandkids' lives!

It's a shame our families have to rely on food Banks and WIC and other things to make ends meat!!! Most of us cannot have two income families because our serviceman or woman are gone so much that they other spouse is a single parent!!!!! This is not ok!!! It's disgracefully and disrespectful!!

We just moved to San Diego a few months ago and are struggling with grocery bill and saving money the cost of living out here is outrageous and we have no way of making more money

We are having to face the same problems we are debating on wether or not we should break up our family and I move back home with the kids while he says down here because we can't simply afford it. But to be honest I don't think that San Diego really cares all they care about is money smh

The same is occurring in the retired community. Very little in annual pay increases in the past 7-8 years. We are having to think about moving to be able to retire

The housing in San Diego is just the start, other then Avocados everything here is more expensive then anywhere we have been stationed. Getting stationed somewhere with no choice should not be a financial or quality of life punishment for any military family.

Our family is e4 with two kids and we struggle daily practically going negative just after bills. We live 25 to 30 minutes from base and we commute about 2 hours daily. The housing prices here are ridiculous and keep going up yearly even when you move further away to "save more" my family along with many struggle so much pay check to pay check.

We just moved back and rent has gone through the roof since we left in 2014. The same place we lived before has gone up $600+ a month!!! That is crazy. Not to mention I am now struggling to find a job that can actually help us once I have to pay for expensive child care, gas, etc. Will I even take any money home to help our family? Oh but we technically make too much to qualify for any type of assistance. SD deserves some type of COLA.
