I left dial up for eastlink and now they are doing this? Do they want to lose customers?

I think it is so unfair that our government gave them money to provide us with internet, which is useless most of the time, and they charge us ridiculous prices and now want more.

They have a monopoly on rural internet services in Nova Scotia; there is no other choice in many places. The quality of service here is vastly inferior to that in the big cities, which will be exempt from the cap entirely, which is very unfair. On some days, regardless of weather, we get odd internet outages, and in some cases can last all day long! It's not 1999 anymore, and the big things on the internet today include streaming video and online gaming. When Eastlink first announced the availability of high speed internet in rural Nova Scotia, they said we would be able to enjoy music, video, and gaming online with this service, and they are now contradicting themselves by saying that it was only ever intended for surfing the web, checking e-mail etc. For the past 5 years, Eastlink has made nothing but broken promises.

I figure by capping the rates you will be lossing customers then how will you be making up the loss revenue?

I was one of the first to connect in my area. There was no one around me slowing down my service or causing it to disappear altogether yet when I called about no or little service, I was told it was because it was: a) raining b) snowing c) cloudy d) I had a tree in the way. When an Eastlink tech finally arrived to check on things, I was told they had I kept getting "bumped" to the opposite side of the tower on occasion. They fixed it so I would no longer be "bumped" and all was well, even with the increase in numbers on the tower I am connected to. I was dismayed to hear about the cap, not directly from Eastlink, but from a news item on CBC. I was further dismayed when I contacted Eastlink and was treated in a very condescending manner with references to rural folks and how we were not using the service as it was intended. Funny, that is not how I remember it being promoted. I was never told how I was to use the internet service I was paying for. Furthermore, the rep said I was wrong about a 15 gb cap that it was 10 gb and that the $2 a gb over was just for the transition period. Transition to what I wonder? As an educator, it was a wonderful option to be able to work from home using the online systems from the NS Dept of Education, that I had to use, rather than spending all day and night at the school where I worked. Knowing how much time educators MUST spend online to work for their students, I am wondering if the government will be providing a subsidy for their at-home internet use? This is a money-grab by Eastlink who joined with the former government and their cronies to make some money off the backs of rural Nova Scotians. Can you imagine this happening in Halifax or any other urban area that enjoys packages that cost the same as what Eastlink is charging but without a 15 GB cap? I checked into bundles offered by various service providers and noted that for what we pay Eastlink, their cap is 160 GB/month. How is a 15 GB cap reasonable? I have

We were given no notice of this change in charges from EastLink. Also when we signed up for this service, there was no mention of there ever being a cap on usage. I signed up and are paying for unlimited usage!!!

Really? Eastlink charges me an unfair amount for the quality and speed of Internet i receive (which is disgustingly slow), and now they want us to act like we're in 2004 and use our computers without streaming, gaming and downloading or else we'll pay extra? Nope, sorry, that doesn't work for me.
