The Scottish Government has consulted experts regarded the membership of an independent Scotland in the European Union. This advice relates to whether membership would be automatic to Scotland, or if Scotland would have to apply as a new nation.
Fiona Hyslop, External Affairs Secretary, said:
"'We consider that to reveal whether or not the information you have requested exists, or is held by the Scottish Government, would be contrary to the public interest.''
