CSE 170/Cogs120

We the students of CSE170/Cogs120 are seeking action by the CSE department to correct what we see as disturbing problems within our current UCSD course.

List of complaints: -Grades based on our ability to "Guess" how our TA's will grade us

We are currently graded on our self assessments at the end of studio not by completion but by if OUR evaluation is within one point of how our TA grades us. How can we be graded on a "guess" especially taking into account the often the often ambiguous expectations presented in this class?

-Unclear expectations on assignments

The assignments do not give clear examples of what we are being graded on or what is expected from us. Despite the massive write ups for each assignment many students are left questioning what exactly each assignment is asking of them.

-Homework grades based on the lowest denominator of TA or student self assessment

Not only are we graded down for guessing incorrectly on how our TA will evaluate us. If we evaluate ourselves lower then our TA for the assignment we retain the LOWEST of the two grades. What about students with humble personalities. This system is all penalty with no reward and creates frustration among students.

-Quiz's

Questions of quiz's have been not been clear. First questions being incorrectly worded. Second not all questions seem to be over covered material or if it is, materials are so scattered over the incoherently set up website its hard to identify what one needs to study for each quiz.

-Outside the box

These points are described as going "above and beyond" and coming up with ideas beyond what is expected of us. Yet these points are included in our total possible points and score. These are advertised as extra credit for exceptional work yet treated and a necessary achievement of each assignment.

The stories coming in about this grading system are even worse than I thought. I am compiling everything to send to the department head this week.

I definitely feel like I've put in a lot of effort into this course and my grade is reflective otherwise due to the grading rubric. I spend much of my hours with my teammates working on the assignments each week and never seem to get the full credit or even the "out of the box" points, which are essentially opinion-based.

spent all night on the project and still got a bad grade because the instructions were super vague. so tired of this.

seriously why are we getting points taken away for being humble??? this grading system is literally designed to make us fail.

The self assessment part is the absolute worst. Getting docked points just because the TA has a different opinion than me is so unfair.

I totally agree with this! I spent so much time on the assignment only to receive an F because I followed the example. It is very frustrating!

I've done all the work I've needed to do in this class, with proficiency, and I have an extremely low grade. I completely agree with this.
