What is SAFE OLYMPIA?
SAFE OLYMPIA focuses on safe reporting for crimes and discrimination related to the City's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) residents and visitors. The Olympia Police Department (OPD) is committed to the safety of all residents and visitors.
Olympia Police Department SAFE OLYMPIA signage is being displayed by local supporting community members, businesses, schools and organizations that work closely with the Olympia Police Department in an effort to reduce anti-LGBTQ crimes, reduce LGBTQ student bullying, and encourage the reporting of LGBTQ crimes. These are also locations supporting safe and secure places for victims of anti-LGBTQ related crimes and harassment. Calling 911 and waiting for police to respond is essential for holding suspects accountable and reducing hate crimes and harassment in general.
In addition to the 911 police response to these incidents, OPD has an LGBTQ liaison officer who promotes partnership efforts between OPD and our LGBTQ community. The LGBTQ liaison officer can be a resource for answers to questions you may have. Our website also has resources for the LGBTQ community including tips for reporting LGBTQ crimes, contacts for addressing LGBTQ bullying, and LGBTQ safety tips.

Displaying the OPD SAFE OLYMPIA symbol at your premise carries some important responsibilities that will greatly assist in protecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) victims of crime.These LGBTQ victims will recognize the OPD SAFE OLYMPIA symbol of safety that indicates your business, organization, school or premise is willing to assist and protect these victims. To make this concept effective the Olympia Police Department would like you to instruct your staff, employees, supervisors, managers, teachers, volunteers, counselors and/or students, etc. of the following protocol:
This will give the Olympia Police Department Jurisdiction on The Evergreen State College Campus.

I have been hearing from so many of you who are worried about how these signs change our local school environment. We are currently working on a formal request to the district to clarify their policy on these partnerships. This is only the beginning of our push for transparency.

Seeing this grow so quickly reminds me that I am not alone in my worries about these changes in our town. My family feels the weight of this momentum and it gives me hope that our concerns will finally be taken seriously.

It's not the OPD that needs to enforce a safer campus for Evergreen students but the Evergreen administration itself that needs to find ways to disavow anti-LGBTQ attitudes. Inviting the OPD to have jurisdiction at the Evergreen campus always opens up the possibility of malpractice by the city's law enforcement that will no doubt put vulnerable populations on campus at greater risk, especially to students of color. Do not let this effort be a successful form of "pinkwashing" by the OPD and Evergreen's own reluctance to provide its own accountability to LGBTQ students.
We have our own police force on campus that require training when it comes to LGBTQ+ students and staff. I'd rather work on them first before inviting another entity on our campus!
Evergreen State College already has its own polic force. It does NOT need more law enforcement on an ACADEMIC institution. I have NEVER felt safe with an increased police force and I am a veteran.
the idea of having a police presence on campus, a force that have endangered the lives of my friends, even one of my professors, is disgusting. this move would do too much to intensify the structural racism and white supremacist presence that's already on campus.
As a woman of color who identifies as two-spirit or Mahu. I do not feel safe allowing, Olympia Police Department here on campus. I've been harassed numerously throughout my time in Lacey and Olympia just, for having a Polynesian tribal sticker on my vehicle. I came to Evergreen to further my education and to feel safe. Adding another police force/entity here will only increase stress and anxiety. Specifically, speaking as a student of color a minority. The Olympia Police Department with recent events, has not been safe when dealing with LGBTQ+ harassment and Queer and Trans* People of Color.

If TESC agrees to allow signage from 'Safe Olympia' to be posted at the campus, this is consent or an agreement from TESC that OPD will have a presence on campus, jurisdiction, on top of the police force we have. 'Safe Olympia' is a service OPD provides to businesses downtown Olympia. Here on campus, we already have a police force in place.
