Spring will be upon us soon and so will the need to address grounds maintenance. There has been ongoing debate among members regarding the use of pesticides and herbicides on the grounds of Colonial Square.
The spraying of pesticides and herbicides is harmful to humans, pets and the environment and lawsuits have been won by people adversely affected by the use of these products.
We respectfully request the Board of Directors to look forward, rather than return to the use of pesticides or herbicides. We believe that organic treatments are healthier for community members, pets, pollinators and the environment on which we all depend.

I was walking past the common area this morning thinking about how strange it is that we even have to ask for this when there are perfectly good organic alternatives sitting right there on the shelf. The amount of messages I have received from people worried about their dogs running through the grass is just wild honestly and it really keeps me pushing forward even when the board stays quiet.

I really thought this might just fizzle out but the momentum here is honestly wild and it feels like people are finally starting to pay attention to what we are actually breathing in every day around the neighborhood. It is weirdly humbling to see so many of you jump on board because it really shows I am not the only one obsessing over these lawn chemicals and wondering if there is a better way to handle the gardens.

I know a lot of people- including myself- who moved here precisely because we don't use pesticides and we try to do right by the ecosystem. It would be a very concerning let down to change course on those values.
Many of our members are quite knowledgeable about alternatives to using herbicides. They possess a multitude of information and resources. As a cooperative we should include members' knowledge and experience to help us create/maintain a beautiful, natural and safe environment
I agree in that using herbicides to create a monoculture lawn is an expense with harmful side effects, and in my opinion would decrease the useability and visual appeal of the grounds. Hardy mix of grasses and other plants, with the dandelions and violets and clover for color, is one of the selling points that i moved here for.
I am most concerned for the worms, plants , birds, etc.
I believe there is a place for a thoughtful discussion to meet mutual goals. I also wonder what is wanted by the community of buyers that we would want to attract. We don't know that. We only know the results of tepid survey.
I have health issues that could be made worse by pesticides and herbicides.

I had cancer as a child and I don’t want to be exposed to more carcinogens for no good reason. Also, if you kill the drought resistant “weeds” we will have a thirsty lawn that will only look good when we have consistent rain or we will have to put an expensive watering system in to keep it green. We can’t afford it.
