This is a bad idea. Tourism is a big part of Virginia Beach's economy. We do not need to be taking chances of an oil spill.

The Santa Barbara spill just this past May shows that big oil technology has not developed to a point where spills can be avoided. Money should be spent to develop and build alternation renewable energy sources.

All you have to do is look at what continues to happen along the California and Gulf coasts to see what offshore drilling will bring to Virginia and North Carolina. I have visited the Galveston tx beaches in the past and always left with Black stained feet and clothing from the tar balls that routinely washed up on the beach, even when there was not an active oil spill cleanup ongoing. We do not need this impact to the environment and the tourism economy in Virginia Beach

Too many reasons to oppose drilling off of the Atlantic coast to enumerate....I strongly oppose!!!

No drilling off my coast

There is not enough oil there to be worth the risk. A spill would be disastrous not only for eastern VA, but also for NC's Outer Banks, Wash. DC & Chesapeake Bay.

The minor economic pluses from the oil industry will be overshadowed by the loss of tourist dollars. No one wants to see oil rigs off the coast. And any oil spill will take years to recover from. Don't drill of the shores off Virginia.

I do not want to see drilling off of the VA coast or the NC coast.

Having grown up in Texas with tar balls on the beach, I know firsthand what offshore drilling would do to our pristine beaches and, accordingly, the impact it would have on tourism and the health of the bay and the ocean.

Not only is drilling a bad idea in general, because of global climate change, but a spill would devastate the largest estuary in the United States, and affect millions of people.

I vividly remember the BP oil spill. They had promised they had a plan if something bad happened. It took them MONTHS to get the oil stopped. We will never know the true damage to the ecosystem from the oil not to mention the forex it they used to "clean it up" (read break down the oil into small particles so you couldn't see them so that not only oil was in the water so was the chemicals.) It is not worth the risk to drill off our coast. You would be risking too much including the tourist trade. Just think about it.

Offshore drilling would ruin our beaches we'd join those that drill by having tar balls on the beach. One spill would damage our area for fishing, other marine life, the beach and affect the Chesapeake Bay tributaries. With City Council so concerned about tourism, which would also be greatly affected they should be the first to oppose drilling off our coast.

I visit VB and would take my money elsewhere in the event of an oil spill. We need to be stewards of our planet instead of exploiting it.

It's a no-brainer. The accidents keep happening and this area depends on having beautiful beaches.

Offshore drilling puts our local economy at risk. An accident could hurt fishing and tourism and the military would have to limit their practice operations due to offshore rigs. Drilling here would not bring a substantial amount of jobs or lower the cost of gas either. It's time to stop looking at fossil fuels as a sustainable part of our present or future and put all our efforts into clean renewables.

I oppose offshore oil and gas drilling in Virginia.

I'm a VB native currently living in CA. I still love coming back home in the summertime and swimming in the warm salty water. It would be completely devastating to see offshore drilling in VA, knowing that one mistake would put our coastline in danger of a catastrophic oil spill. Let's learn from the BP disaster in the gulf, and say NO to offshore drilling.

Have we not learned from previous events that this is a huge danger to everyone? Keep all those dangers away from virginia!! Keep Virginia beautiful!!
