Don’t forget innocent kids and elders in the neighbourhood have their human rights too. They deserve a safe environment. Please keep them safe by terminating the modular home plan on 59th and Heather St in Vancouver now.

The new homeless housing (for 10 years, with unlimited continuation) will be built right next to 3 schools, all grades from grade 1 to 12. There is also a preschool 2 blocks away at Oak Park.
The City of Vancouver kept promising safety on the site. But when asked about off the site safety, including grade 1 children walking home by themselves, the City keep skipping and ignoring our questions. There are also many elderly in the area who often go for walks after dinner. Who will ensure their safety?
It would be like forced to walk down East Hastings everyday because you live there. There is good reason why the police has to pretty much camp there 24/7. I love to help the homeless too. Helping them requires one on one talk and connection. That means going to them and treat them for a meal. Or inviting them to church and feed them.
But that is not what is happening. Putting a large number of homeless next to the helpless kids and elderly isn't the way. Because some (not all) homeless are certainly criminals, has mental issues, addicted to drugs and alcohol, pedophilia, etc. So this is like putting the prey right next to the predator. I love the homeless. But I also love the helpless children and elderly.
The City of Vancouver themselves researched and discovered that 53% of the homeless are addicted to drugs.

On page 28:
"In 2016, addiction/substance use was the most common health issue for people who are homeless. Fifty-three (53%) percent of respondents had an addiction/substance use issue. The next most common health problem was a medical condition (reported by 42% of respondents), closely followed by mental health issues (reported by 40% of respondents)."
There are plenty of other much better and fitting places to built permanent homeless housing. But the City wants to built it here just because they don't want to buy other properties.

Thanks for bringing this info. This really shows the hypocrisy of the city on this issue in general. We should actually make this a talking point in our protest.
My husband at the info session asked why the city after evicting hundreds of families from Little Mountain housing program and razed all the buildings before the Olympics, only to leave it as empty land for 7 years now?! Why didn't they use that piece of land as well if they really cared about homeless.
