I can barely afford to pay my own student loans, now that cuomo is closing our local prison which made my husband (a correctional officer) transfer to a prison that he has to commute to. Is this why Cuomo is really closin prisons and taking jobs out of small towns that can't afford to lose them? So we can give criminals a free college education?

Already posted my disbelief on wkbw & wivb Facebook. Sad Cuomo, very sad ! Give the extra money you have found in our state budget to law abiding people with college bills!!!!!!

I do not want my tax dollars to be used to aid prisoners. They should not be given an advantage that middle class citizens cannot even afford.

I am currently obtaining my Masters degree to try to better my life and I am almost $80k in debt because of it. Where is my free college tuition? I am a law abiding citizen trying to live the "American Dream" don't I deserve a break?

What about to kids who haven't committed crimes and aren't incarcerated?!? $5K per inmate?!? Will you provide the same to my dauighter who will not be incarcerated - when she goes to college? Implement common core which eliminates quality teaching within NYS, but provide criminals with free education. What are you thinking Gov. Cuomo????

the problem isn't that felons don't have the opportunity to better themselves, the problem is that they don't want to. The rate of recidivism is two thirds no matter what the Dept of Corrections does. Free stuff just burdens those who have solid values. Spend the money on a senior high school scholarship fund for a high achiever. That makes more sense to me.

It is crazy that a prisoner could recieve free colege classes, while Iam a law abiding citizen, and have to pay thousands. That is not fair at all!!

Why not provide free college for the tax paying citizens of NYS, instead of weighing them down with extreme student loan debt. Why should our tax dollars go to providing opportunities that we ourselves are denied?
