It is insanity to provide free education to a prisoner ...... The state could offer to pay me retroactively for my college education .......... better yet, pay for my daughter's college education which is ongoing right now within the SUNY system.

Quote from my sixth grade daughter, reading this petition over my shoulder: "Why should I have to pay for college when a convict gets it for free? Just so much NO!" GED for prisoners who need it? Yes. College? No. Give law-abiding regular folks a break before giving convicts more freebies at our expense.

Dear Governor Andrew Cuomo;
I always had my doubts about you (and I certainly DID NOT vote for you...). Now I know with certainty that you have no business running this state. Please explain the logic behind taking state aid away from public schools year after year after year, leaving kids without the educational resources they need - namely teachers - but finding it necessary to provide a college education for prisoners. You have most certainly lost your mind.
I would just like to remind you that prison is where criminals go to pay THEIR DEBT to society, not where SOCIETY pays their college debts. Mental health services? Certainly. Drug abuse counseling and rehabilitation? Of course. College? Um, no.
Taxpayers pay for their own children to go to college, or adult children pay their own way to college. That is called self reliance. Why is a prisoner or an illegal immigrant due something the hard-working, law abiding taxpayer is not due?
I can only pray other New Yorkers wake up and vote you out of office. And I certainly hope this latest episode in insanity gets full media coverage nationwide so that no one makes the mistake of voting for you should you run for president.
In the meantime, I guess the best thing for me to do as a teacher and a taxpayer is to suggest that my students go directly to JAIL after high school. In that way, they can at least utilize public funds that should have been spent on them in the first place.
Sincerely,
Horrified in Hamburg

How about making it free for the people that behave instead of making them suffer from debt and let the criminals pay? It's a crock!

Why don't you direct those dollars towards hard working middle class families? Lets give our children a chance to get an education and a degree. Don't waste tax payers monies. This is probably the worst idea yet Governor Cuomo. You have lost my support. Another reason most of my family has left NY and many of friends along with myself WILL be leaving NY with in the next 7 yrs.

We have many college graduates with student loans to pay back, and we to offer this for free if you commit a crime. If you are in jail you get a free education? NO. I think the crime rate would go up. I think we could better help the prisoners get back on there feet by teaching them right from wrong, but NOT free college.

My husband I bear the brunt of our two sons' SUNY college expenses totaling over $50,000.00. They themselves carry $50,000.00 each with little to know job prospects. How about you concentrate on providing lower loan rates, extended loan repayment start dates and lower SUNY costs for NYS residents?

Help me pay off my school loans. I've never been in trouble with the law. I just can't work due to an injury and have been denied for everything.
