I am in thousands of dollars of debt for deciding to go to college and educate myself. Why should someone who has committed felonies, some violent and drug related, get a free ride to college? Yet another reason to leave this god forsaken state. Why should my taxes pay for their education? I could give a damn if they have a better shot of integrating into our society rather than going back to jail, where they BELONG

I would like an account of how many inmates have a high school diploma. If they want to earn a High school diploma while in prison I see that a first step. definitely not a college degree. There are too many college graduates now without jobs in New York State.

If the Governor thinks NY state has extra money for education he needs to send it back to our kids. The state's budget problems that they passed down to the school districts via the Gap Elimination program is hurting our schools.

What is Cuomo thinking?? My son had to work 3 jobs, pay for his own supplies, and it took years for him to pay off his college debt. People in prison have broken the law and they get meals, clothing, cable TV, reading material, etc and NOW taxpayers should also pay for their College?? So isn't that rewarding them (at taxpayers expense) for breaking the law?

vocational training would be better than college courses as many prisoners lack required skills in reading, writing, spelling, and math.

As a teacher in a high needs school, I am interested to know how many inmates in New York State correctional facilities would be ready for college level course work? Given current poor high school graduation rates, one might guess that not many of these individuals are prepared for college level work. Whether or not there is motivation to succeed is another matter. Not only would they receive $5,000 per year for college tuition, they would first require remedial work to bring them to a level of readiness in reading, writing, math, science and history adequate to prepare them for college classes. Are there estimates to the cost of such remedial work? Who is going to teach these individuals? This writer works three jobs to meet expenses, including a tidy sum borrowed for graduate work leading to a master's degree. We all have choices to make, and there are consequences to those choices. Sad to say: some of us must learn the hard way, and simply lie in the bed they have so foolishly made for themselves.

my son are work very hard to pay off their college loans 8 years later.where is the sate money to help the law abiding young people who had to move out of state to find their jobs in their field. the inmates need courses on how the be a kind law abiding citizen.
