Our children and Grandchildren are leaving this State because of high taxes and lack of jobs, the Govenor needs to rethink his position.

I understand the importance of rehabilitation of inmates. However there still must remain some sort of punishment when one goes to jail. Education is, as been clearly held, not a fundamental right. It is a privilege. As long as I and countless families word hard to pay for college I will not support this imitative. I could not be farther from supporting this initiative.

This cannot happen. I read a comment that suggested the prisoners take it as a loan and pay it back like every other college student. I could work with that.

I'm sorry, this goes too far. I am struggling to pay all my bills including my parental student loans. Why not have these inmates sign a student loan note, and pay the $5000 back when they are released? Most every college graduate has years of loans ahead of them when they graduate.

Syracuse already has a program for free college tuition ( Say Yes Program) Stop giving hard working taxpayers money away.... VOTE CUOMO OUT !

I understand what the Governor is saying about saving money, however, isn't the idea of incarceration the same thing? He cannot believe that tax payers who are struggling to make ends meet, which does involve paying for college in many cases, support this idea. I disagree 100%.

I am a widow and single mom that has had to forgo school for the last two semesters due to lack of funds. Why should someone that committed a crime get a free ride? Why should they be rewarded for their bad behavior? I don't think they will learn their lesson that way. Our taxes in this state are already too high. I'd rather see less people in jail for minor infractions and keep prison for major crimes. Stop taxing people to death in this state!

Its absolute BS that Cuomo wants to give murderers, rapists, and pedophiles in prison a free college education, yet honest law-abiding citizens have to bust their ass to pay for theirs. This whole idea is FUBAR!

My daughter paid for her own college education and I paid for my own MBA, and neither of us are working in our fields! Just keeping our "heads above water"! We DO NOT want our hard-earned money to go to prisoners! Give them a GDA, teach them real life skills, and train them in the trades (electronics, plumbing, carpentry, etc.)!

This is just not fair! I bust my ass, working for the state of NY, in one of the state homes for the disabled that this asshole (Cuomo) has already "punished" as an attempt to save money! The mentally disabled have to suffer so people that commit crimes can thrive?! That's complete BS! I'm thinking my daughter should go to prison just so we can afford for her to go to college! MESSED UP! Get your head out of your ass Mr. Cuomo!

I have a Masters degree that I worked hard to pay for! I work in the mental health field so understand why people become incarcerated and support rehab and prevention of recidivism. But not college education for free! I could live with teaching trades to inmates such as welding or plumbing. I sure hope this does not get approved.

I work full time and part time to pay for my childs education at ECC. I am sick to death of all the freebies that are given. Committing a crime should not be rewarded.

Many young men and women an not afford to go to college. Why not help them with costs rather than criminals. If these criminals were interested in getting a college degree, they could have done that instead of steal, kill or whatever. This "free college for prisoners" is only sending out a message to youth that crime "does pay". If they want a college education and can not afford it, just rob a store and wait to be arrested and found guilty. Now your college tuition will be paid for and you can spend a few years in prison to get it.
