This is almost as bad as Sheldon Silver's idea to give college money to illegal aliens. Increase TAP funding for those who are elligible, and eliminate the Gap Elimination Adjustment that is robbing money from local school districts first, then let's talk about classes for prisoners.

As the parent of a currently enrolled University at Buffalo student, I struggle between the choice of my retirement income and my son being gravely in debt upon finishing college. The system has not kept up with the changes in the retirement system. Many non public employees must fund their own retirements, and since they are middle income do not qualify for student aide in any form. Before funding individuals who have not followed the law, think about those who do everything right and still get penalized. BTW--I wish my son could earn a Bachelors Degree on $5000 per year. Maybe this discussion needs to head in that direction!

We should not be rewarding people for breaking the law. When my children and myself, have worked and live within the law, and have to struggle to pay for college. If you want to give away money, give it to the people trying to better themselves and doing it the right way.

Please convince the rest of the legislature to join in your fight. Free college for criminals is a slap in the face to every law abiding citizens in NYS - it borders on discriminatory. My son put his life on the line in both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and still didn;t get a "free ride" for college - he had to PAY INTO his own GI bill. and is now paying for the uncovered expenses for college to earm his BA!!!

Why should the taxpayers fund Cuomo's brain-storm to make our state prisons into colleges with free tuition assistance for prisoners.

I got my MBA degree to help get a better job, but it hasn't helped and now I have $50,000 in college loans I can't pay back. Like the rest of us, inmates need a job that pays a living wage when they get out so they won't have to commit crimes to survive. If they give inmates $5,000 toward a college education, they should give the rest of us at least the same--and lower the interest rate on student loans. Why can I get a mortgage at a lower interest rate than a Federal student loan?

Pay off our student loans before we have to rob a 7-11 to help pay them off.

I grew up in the inner city with most of these people who now call themselves inmates. I was offered the same oppritunities they were. The only difference is I took advantage and they didn't. And for that I now get punished? 30,000+ in student loans, mind you that's without a bachelors degree, and they get a free ride? off of money that I make working my ass off 40+ hours a week for? No governor Cuomo. not a good idea my friend.

This is so WRONG!! We need to start rewarding those doing the right thing for a change and stop rewarding those who mess up. They will never change when everything keeps being handed to them.
It is time to get off the college kick. It would be better to spend the time and money on trade education College Graduates cannot finding jobs Veterans are not finding jobs Republicans swimming in cash do not create, They put money into Companies with the sole purpose of selling assets and closing them

Prisoners are in prison for a reason. They choose to break the laws of the land. Their punishment should NOT be rewarded with FREE COLLEGE. Responsible US citizens earn their college education. Governor Cuomo is a rebel - he knows it - and he is telling America he will not abide by the moral rules of society.
