I struggled to put myself through college and I will have to pay large bills for my children to attend college. Why does NY make it a better deal to get arrest and/ or live on welfare than go to college and get a job on your own!

Prison is set up as a punishment, getting free college shouldn't be a reward for committing a crime. Everyone else has to figure out how to pay for their associate's and bachelor's degrees, why should prisoners be any different. Why not have them repay a student loan when they get out of prison? Also, would giving out free bachelor's degrees to prisoners be pointless? Are there jobs that would have a bachelor's degree as a requirement going to hire someone with a criminal record or would they be eliminated from consideration? We shouldn't be giving out free degrees if they can't get a job in which said degree is needed. Wouldn't the money be better spent on our school systems, giving out additional aid to college students who need assistance or how about giving scholarships and aid to kids who are at risk, send them to college as a crime prevention plan so they don't go to jail in the first place instead of inmates.

Education is good but not at the taxpayer expense. After the tuition then they will need books and of course a computer. When will it end. If one is interested in advancing himself let him get books in the prison library and get the knowledge to take with him as he leaves prison. Challenge for credit based on learning and go from there. It is bad enough that the taxpayer needs to pay to incarcerate someone but to keep adding additional benefits it will soon look good to commit a crime so that one can receive a free education. When everyone in New York who desires a college education receives a free ride then we can extend it to our incarcerated members of society

First off, this is a slap in the face to all of the law-abiding citizens who are struggling to afford college loans and tuition. Secondly, who is going to hire someone coming out of prison, regardless of if they have a degree? If it comes down to competition, an employer is certainly always going to choose someone WITHOUT the criminal background. If you want to prevent recidivism, make prison so unbearable (take away the weights, the cable tv, etc) so that they don't want to come back.

I paid my own way through undergraduate and graduate degree programs. I am now struggling to repay my loans. Inmates should not be entitled to a free education when my friends and I, who have worked hard to put ourselves through school, are not entitled to the same help.

You're going to pay for a convicted felon to get free college, but me as a vet i have to fight to get my benifits to go to college month after month. I don't support this move at all. Why don't you reward the people that are doing good rather then rewarding those that have done bad in an effort to get them to do good things.

A bit hard to support this when I see my children saddled with debt trying to get their education while working two minimum wage jobs that barely keeps gas in the tank. Sad that I, as a mom, should be researching prisons and the crimes that warrant a 4 year sentence to give my kids a debt free education.

This proposal is absolutely ridiculous. I had to work hard and pay for my college degree while my sister is in debt from her student loans for a more advanced degree program. Why reward inmates when law-abiding citizens are struggling to pay off their student loans? Restore TAP funds before assisting inmates. I am against this outlandish proposal.
