Let's be honest here - if you are a convicted felon, what kind of job are you likely to get? You could have three advanced degrees, but if you also have a conviction for rape no one is going to hire you. If you commit your next crime in the workplace, that employer can be held liable. And you shouldn't have a shot at a job before a law-abiding citizen, anyway. You should get a cell, meals, access to books, and basic health care - BASIC, not better than what the working class has access to - and lots of time to think about how you've screwed up.

NYS didn't give us one cent for our children to attend college so I think it is a slap in the face. The governor wants tax paying crime victims to pay for college for the criminals that committed the crimes against them. Ridiculous!!!!! Why don't we just give them the keys to the prisons and lock up the tax payers!!!

I think an opportunity for education is good but they should have to pay for it AND not be paid a wage while incarcerated. My househould doesn't make $60k/year (cost of an inmate) and we can't afford to have children. Health insurance over $1000/month (both of us need it). Still paying off my own student loans. We added on to our home (2005) so both our mom's could move in due to their health. Now that they are both gone, we went bankrupt in 2008 after losing my job. Affordable Home Program was a farse; was yanked around for a year before telling us we weren't elegible/bank didn't participate-with the help of a state approved agency. Still have to pay the student loan and have a lower paying job and can't sell the house since it's it's not finished. I would prefer my tax dollars go to eduaction of non-incarcerated children/people, programs and infrastructure to improve our environment and well-being (physical & mental). I also think inmate ammenties should be reduced and more hard labor should be institued. My brother was a NYSCO for 20 years so I do have some insight. Oh, is the money from the lottery still going towards education and are the tolls (temporaty since 1960's?) still going towards our roads? Stop bullshitting around, being paid off by big groups and the absurdly rich, and fix our system...please!

This is just plain ridiculous...more free hand outs from the democrats... Give me a break...law abiding citizens can't afford college educations while we fund criminals educations. Common sence, there is a definition for that word somewhere in the dictionary!!!

If you can educate inmates for $5,000 a year how come it cost my children $40,000 a year??? My children worked hard for their educations and continue to do the right things to maintain a good life. If you haven't done the right things educational perks don't belong to you. They chose their path - we all do!! I definitely say NO to free college for prisoners.
