Saving Scavo

I graduated from Scavo in 1993! I hope the community rallies around this program. It has helped so many young people.

This is where I graduated this school has helped many of kids to shut it down would be a shame

This school helped me so much. I was a young troubled teenage girl skipping class and not caring about finishing high school. I came to Scavo and seen how small the classes where and you do work on your own pace and it was a half a day!

I graduated in 1995. Back when it was transitioning from South Alternative to Vincent C. Scavo High School. I'm grateful to my teachers and the people I knew there. Without this program, I never would have graduated. I was working full time and going to school for almost 2 years there. I appreciate every teacher I had. THANK YOU, SCAVO.

I personally know a counselor at Scavo. She builds kids up while holding them accountable for their actions and rewarding them for their accomplishments. Many of these kiddos have never experienced the care and compassion that counselor provides. When she gave me a tour of the school I was not only amazed by diversity of the students but the complexity of the real world classes and programs offered to what many would call non-tradition or challenged students. From a father that raised a daughter that didn’t fit the mold of the traditional school I certainly understand the need. I strongly recommend the the driving for e behind this unimaginable idea to put whatever political gain aside and think of the future of the kids.

This is the best school ever! I wish sll schools had thr small class size with wonderful caring teachers. Save Scavo, closing it means the district is not willing to serve underserved students

If it wasn’t for scavo I wouldn’t have the credits and as far into school as I am. They helped me better than any other school I been to

Hate to see it close losts of kids that can not handle goin ggv to school full time took forward to comeing to school here I no alot th as t have came throw also by granddaughter is looking forward to next fall to graduation if you close she more then likely won't feel her dream so sad

I have known a few people who have graduated from Scavo. I know two who are siblings, they did not go to Scavo because they were "bad" they dropped out to take jobs to support their family. In addition, there are plenty of other people who do need a different style of teaching than other schools avaible to them, and not everyone can self teach (aka online), or have the time or resources to do so. I think Des Moines teachers, who are already stretched to the max, will be diserviced by the closure of Scavo. In turn, the student population as a whole will be negatively affected. Fairness is not determined by same treatment, but by supporting and encouraging and challenging at the level needed by each student. Scavo allows Iowa to scale this support and better equip our youth, who are our future.

These are children who need this specific type of environment- staff who not only know their academic needs, but understand the students need emotional support, assistance with housing, transportation, childcare and beyond. They don’t just teach the students they are there to help them rise up.

No student should have their safe space taken away, let alone their safe people. ❤️
