I was falling behind in school when i was a Sophomore. I also became pregnant at 16 years old. The only thing that saved me was Scavo. They taught me how to maintain my schooling & work with a young child. I was able to work at my own pace & with that I was able to finish 3 months earlier than I was expected to. I graduated on time with my class. For this I am forever grateful!

I went to Scavo and graduated from there as well. I'm not a morning person and it was hard for me to get up early in the AM for classes. But Scavo gave me the opportunity to come in later and still graduate. They are much appreciated.

One of the best schools that I went to for continuing my high school education Jim Carnahan and Vince Scavo helped me so much and I graduated! If it hadn't been for them I never would have!!

I wouldn't have been able to graduate if not for Scavo High and the amazing teachers and staff. This school is sometimes the last resort for many kids to make it somewhere in life. Don't take that away

as I am southern Missouri I cant attend but I went to Scavo better known to me as Greater Des Moines Educational Center on 2nd Ave in 1973 & 1974. if it was not for Mr. Scavi and the other wonderful teachers I would have not graduated. As a matter of fact my actual graduating year should have been 1975 but due to the Scavo I graduated in 1974. I then went on to DMACC and worked for non for profit agencies for over 30 years, 18 years spent working in the Brain Injury Rehab program 18 years in Ankeny, Iowa. if it wasnt for Mr. Scavo and staff set the initial platform for my future. Please keep this program going. It was a god sent and without it I dont know where I would have ended up.

Two of my children have attended Scavo. The attention and caring the staff gives the kids is above and beyond. My first son went there because of attendance. His high school wasn’t doing anything to address his attendance. I had asked his school for help and got none. The school had even told him to drop out if he didn’t want to be there.
My second son was on crutches and had to use the elevator at his high school. He was going to have a major hip surgery. The elevator broke down and he had to take the stairs. Some of his classes were on the third floor. His surgeon even told the school he shouldn’t do stairs in his condition. We kept being told DSM public schools had to find the cheapest people to fix it plus it was so old the parts were hard to find. They didn’t have all the classes he was taking on the first floor. So after two months the high school finally told me to transfer him to Scavo because they had a working elevator. I felt sorry for the older teachers who had to walk up three flights of stairs to get to their classroom. Moving him to Scavo was the best thing.
I hope they keep Scavo so other kids have the chance to go to a school that really cares about their future and goes above and beyond to help them graduate.

Why shut down a school which gives opportunities to those who need the different style of outlet to complete their education?
No need to shut it down!!! You already shut down the 9th grade school (Lincoln Rails Academy ) so you could have MORE office space you didn’t need!!!
How about the superintendent and others who have NEVER stepped foot in a classroom, go and try it for a day!!! Then you will see why Scavo is needed and other resources which are lacking!

I believe this program works when conventional school isn’t. I attended South alternative when Vince Scavo was principal and it was the right fit for me when Lincoln wasn’t any longer.
