Scavo is an amazing place, it has helped me and SOOOO many other past and current students. The teachers and all other staff go above and beyond to help each student personally with their situation and things they might be struggling with, the show students that they DO deserve a second chance at an education. If we loose scavo we will loose many troubled and struggling student completely.

Scavo changed my life and allowed me to get an education when it wasn’t possible for me to attend a traditional school.

I know so many people that have graduated through Scavo! my mom’s closest friend also graduated from scavo. Scavo is literally an extra push for people who don’t have the motivation to even get into school they’re flexible. all the staff are very friendly they’re even more helpful than the regular teachers that you guys have teaching at the other schools.

I graduated from Scavo back in 2015-2016 and the teachers I had personally understood some of my stuggles and made me feel more than I did going to North, Hoover, and Homebound. They helped me communicate with my dad and the major problems going on at home. It was nice escape to come to an environment where you know you're accepted and build an actual relationship with the staff. When we were struggling at home, one of the counselors came to me because I had expressed my issues at home with her and led me straight to the pantry they have inside the school and said to take what I think my family had needed. You know how much of a stress that took off of me knowing I didn't have to skip school to work anymore than I already had to, to buy clothes, food, and transportation because I lived in West Des Moines at the time and was too far away from a bus line. Mr. Botkin, Mr. Stemstrud, Mrs. Hennessy, Mrs. Jill, Mrs. Sheila, Robin (the former art teacher), and many more had a huge impact on my life and always let everyone know their resources were limited but did as much as they could for us! I thank them for inspiring to want to go-to school vs most of the other schools I attended where they let you know you were one of a thousand constantly.

Scavo has sucessfully supported continued education resulting in graduation for many students that otherwise would have been dropouts, including teen mothers. Among other opportunities these programs promoted these young parents and other student into the workforce as opposed to relying on welfare because they never graduated from high school. We need to continue to offer and support these programs in our communities.
