Saving Philosophy at the University of Detroit Mercy

The philosophy instruction at UD Mercy is invaluable and I would incourage more course offerings, not less.

This is a very eye opening course that allows you to explore issues abd questions that are still evident in this day and age. This was a liberal arts core I had* to take as a Nursing Major but found it to be worth while after only after a few classes. Lastly, instructor Jeff Renaud was an amazing philosophy professor who had the entire class intrigued every lecture.

I never thought as a Nursing major that I would take as much of a liking to philosophy as I have now. From the moment I was accepted to UDM they stressed a well rounded education and explained that although the core objectives we have to meet do not directly pertain to your major; they will help you in the long run. I do not understand why they would get rid of something that can allow someone to expand their thinking skills, argue logically, and learn to appreciate the opinions of others. If anything philosophy is the core class that I have enjoyed the most and have gotten the most valuable and applicable knowledge from. I know that taking the philosophy class that I have taken will make me a better nurse in the future. They say they want great things for us, so why deny the benefits that Philosophy can give the students at UDM?

It has that ignorance surrounds us, and is usually quite popular.

I have learned a great deal through discussions that challenged my preconcieved notions and the ideas I just accepted as being true. Great class.

Philosophy is not only a great and interesting class, but it help teach you to think about things in a new way which can be beneficial in other classes also.

So much for taking "pride" in the liberal arts. I don't understand why UDM would even considering this. Philosophy provokes people to think differently and in some cases challenge their current beliefs. UDM is only hurting themselves in the end.

Professor Oljar makes learning Philosophy enjoyable. I learned a lot from her class, and wish I would have taken my other philosophy class with her!

Way to go, UDM! It is about time we take out the classes that enhance a student’s enlightenment and critical thinking skills. I am a big fan of watching defenseless creatures scurry around in a world that requires them to use their mind to survive. Deprive them of the great minds from Socrates to Nietzsche, Descartes to Sartre. Who needs ‘em!? Not us UDM students, that’s for sure! While we are on a roll stripping our future graduates of their problem solving thought processes, their capacity to view arguments from multiple perspectives, to articulate their thoughts in a meaningful way and to communicate clearly with others, we might as well get rid of algebra, history, and ethics, too. If people want to learn this garbage, they can relocate to one of them universities in Beijing! Good Riddance!

Learned a lot from James Durham's philosophy class

In the beginning I was thinking that Philosophy requirements were stupid but after taking an intro to philosophy and symbolic logic class I can definitely say that this requirement should remain. These classes taught me how to think more critically and logically. With symbolic logic class under my belt I can argue my point pretty well. Great classes, it would suck to see them gone!

How can you accept anything as truth until you've come to question it? This class can open up the mind of any and all who sit and listen. It's more than just a class, it's an overwhelming period of confusion--a period of confusion necessary to the future growth of each and every student who steps into that classroom.

I transfer to University of Detroit Mercy because my major is Philosophy and they have some great Teach like Prof. Oljar, I hope they will not take philosophy away because it fact and allows student to be clear in their own reasoning.

Graduating Winter 2015 - I'm shocked to hear that UDM wants to remove critical thinking studies from the core curriculum. Understanding where man values and virtues come from is fundamental and important. Professor Oljar is one of the most passionate professors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from.

I had Ethics and Intro to Philosophy and both of my professors were very passionate about their classes and challenging students to think critically. Save the liberal arts ! :)
