The Philosophy department has hands down the Professors in the University.

Philosophy makes a student think outside of the box and what the world inclines them to think. If these top level courses that are made to challenge students in specific ideas are taken away, we will be subjected to the thinking of the world and what the government wants us specifically to learn. Biology, Psychology, and Criminal Justice are great, but is just learning of facts. Philosophy makes you question what you believe and how you support that.

What programs are we going to try and eliminate next History! Philosophy is a big part of who we are. It has taught me to look at and think about the world differently. Wasn't our technology

Philosophy is very important to me, especially as a life skill, because the truth about the meaning of life matters more than anything else in this world. Everyone needs to know philosophy!

Philosophy helps open your mind and to logically create arguments that exist in conversations every day. It is also useful for majors. like computer science, that need critical thinking abilities.

Philosophy truly strengthens the mind. In my class this past semester, studying philosophy broadened my way of thinking. It facilitates out-of-the-box thinking, and allows students to consider ideas they may not have considered due to biases. It results in objectivity and critical thinking. You learn to formulate arguments and break them down all the same. If anything, Philosophy is the last class that should be taken out of our curriculum. Please look elsewhere, for the sake of the future minds.

I believe that it is important for everyone because it allows for a deeper analysis for every day life and every day decisions. It is a class that everyone should take and get access to that knowledge.

I'm a freshman who just took the intro course and I already have gotten so much from it. The class has allowed me to step back and really analyze the world around me in a different way. I feel like a more well-rounded person.

Philosophy is the foundation for all modern academic pursuits. I will not financially support a university that does not feel that.

My graduate thesis in architecture came directly from my philosophy courses. Without that background I would have missed so much of my rich experience at udm. The liberal arts background is what separates universities like udm from itttech and trade schools. Don't degrade yourself or your students. Because we all want great things- not just good enough for a job things.

As a Biochemistry graduate in 2010, I found some of my most socially relevant courses came from within the Philosophy department. The Philosophy department transferred the critical thinking skills developed for use within the scientific method to the everyday choices confronted in life. My course work and extracurricular Ethics Bowl experiences have persistently kept integrity, cultural sensitivity and moral hazard in my mind when decision making.

Skills associated with identifying, constructing, and evaluating arguments are essential to the development of all students of higher education. Providing exposure to philosophy within the core curriculum is essential, at the very least, to providing the context for students to reflect on the justification of their own beliefs. As a Jesuit and Mercy institution, marginalizing the role of the philosophy department at UDM would be in direct contradiction to the university’s mission statement of seeking to integrate the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development of its students.
