Hi, I am a former student of MHSA. I still have the arts in my daily life, and I believe that you should not change things. The school brought inspiration to those who had none and brought life to those who feel that they’ve failed in every area of their outside life. Visual art is important to those Who learn and are creative visually. You should not change something that has inspired many students to be great and to be the people that they are today. Instead of trying to change something, how about you take the time out to know why Visual art is important to students and have a open mind to maybe learn something new on your end.

I am signing this petition because back when I went to arts, my major was visual arts. Today I still do art and I am thankful that I went to a high school that had that major for me. As human we are art, we need art to stay!

I loved the creative majors they offered and the originality of the school it is highly uinfair of those who want to express themselves through art. They should not be forced too take things unrelated to general education or their ideal future

As a visual art major alumni and the son of a former teacher at Arts, this is quite heartbreaking. I understand the idea and think an engineering class would be brilliant. I don't like the idea of making it mandatory for visual arts students though. If computer engineering is a major it should be its own major. Cutting back the resources of Visual Art to make it happen is wrong. It's insulting to the teachers and curriculum all together. How come there can be so many diffrent majors for music, but if a new visual art curriculum is introduced it all thrown together? This is the equivalent of making all orchestra majors take a mandatory jazz class. They are not the same and trying to make them one thing will only dampen the students learning experience. Students should not be forced into major classes they didn't sign up for

I wholeheartedly support the petition urging the Milwaukee Board of School Directors to address the concerns of the school community at Milwaukee HS of the Arts (MHSA). It is crucial to reverse the principal's mandate requiring 10th-grade Visual Art students to take Intro to Engineering Design as one of their core courses in the Visual Art curriculum. This decision undermines the integrity and focus of the Visual Art program, as it diverts valuable instructional time and resources away from the students' chosen discipline. By removing this requirement, students will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the visual arts and develop their skills and creativity to their fullest potential.
Furthermore, it is essential to retain Room 106 as a dedicated classroom for the delivery of Visual Arts instruction, in compliance with MPS Administrative Policy 7.45 (2)(h) governing Art Education. This policy clearly states that art instruction should take place in a class space that is conducive to the study of art, including necessary resources such as appropriate storage space, furniture, technology, tools, and sink access. By adhering to this policy, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors will ensure that students have an environment that supports their artistic development and enables them to explore various techniques and mediums effectively.
Art education requires a specialized space that fosters creativity, experimentation, and collaboration. Removing Room 106 as a dedicated classroom would compromise the quality of art instruction at MHSA and hinder the students' ability to reach their full artistic potential. By upholding MPS Administrative Policy 7.45 (2)(h) and ensuring that appropriate space exists for art instruction, the Milwaukee Board of School Directors will demonstrate their commitment to providing a robust and enriching educational experience for the students at MHSA.

As an MHSA alum, this is not the experience I would have wanted. This is really unfortunate and has absolutely nothing to do with art education. Stop wasting money on this stuff and pay your teachers more.
