The University of Nevada, Reno is facing a 6.9% budget reduction, significantly impacting the College of Education. The Curricular Review Proposal calls for the elimination of the Master's Program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
This would mean that no teacher education program would remain to address the needs of English language learners (ELLs) in Northern Nevada. With Washoe County only graduating 16% of it ELLs we believe this proposed closure puts Nevada's population and its economy in jeopardy. Furthermore, we believe all Nevadans should have equal access to a quality education.
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the MA TESOL program at UNR be preserved.
My kids went through the system here and the ESL support was the only reason they made it through. Taking this away helps nobody.

16 percent graduation rate for ELLs is embarrassing for this state. removing the program will only make those numbers worse. think about the future of these kids.

UNR needs to get their priorities straight. Cutting TESOL is purely short sighted.

This is ridiculous. Our ELL students already struggle enough and need trained teachers. Do not cut this program!!

Fix the budget elsewhere. Education should come first ALWAYS.
