The Board of Zoning Appeals finally caved and granted the variance for the Leonard at Logan House. City officials tried to bully a local business out of existence but they failed because we refused to be ignored. Stay vigilant because we must ensure they never try to pull this stunt …

The City of Grand Rapids is threatening to shut down all events at the beloved Leonard at Logan House in Heritage Hill.  Without events or additional rooms, the house will no longer be able to afford to operate.  The Leonard at Logan has been operating under an approved special use permit for Bed & Breakfasts with vague ordinance language regarding events with full disclosure of the intent to house guests at the B&B and become a wedding venue.

Here is the zoning for B&Bs in Grand Rapids.  It does not say anything about events occurring inside the home.

The Leonard at Logan House B&B has now requested a variance for the ability to continue holding events & allow more than five guest rooms.  At least two other locations in Grand Rapids also host events under the same ordinance.  Some of these events are much larger than those requested or held by the Leonard at Logan, yet no violation has been filed against these other businesses/locations.

The Leonard at Logan House has the support of a large majority of neighbors, many local businesses, guests, and friends.  This petition is important because without our ability to show this overwhelming support, The Leonard at Logan will be forced to close.

We are petitioning to the Board of Zoning Appeals, the Heritage Hill Board, the City of Grand Rapids Planning Commission, and the Grand Rapids City Commissioners to allow the variance as requested and to change the existing ordinance to enable Bed & Breakfasts to survive in Grand Rapids.

Here is the appeal that we sent to the City.  At the bottom of the page is what the City told the neighbors we are asking for.  There are a few differences.

Please sign this petition and help spread the word - and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for you support.

Five hundred people have signed on to stop the City of Grand Rapids from destroying the Leonard at Logan House. This blatant double standard from the city officials stops today because they finally have to look at how many of us demand they back off.

We need more places like this in GR not less. Keep the events going!

This place is a gem for the neighborhood. Why is the city making things so hard for small businesses that actually bring people into the area?

Total double standard here. If other places get to operate like this then why are they targeting the Leonard? Let them be.

The city needs to get their act together and stop trying to shut down people who actually put effort into maintaining these historic homes.

Ridiculous red tape. The Leonard is a staple of Heritage Hill and they always run a professional operation. Leave them alone!

Such a beautiful venue. Had my daughters wedding shower there and it was perfect. Stop picking on them.
