Save Kansas City's Historic Swope Park Disc Golf Course

As PDGA Events Manager, let me try to convey the importance of this course to both the local community, as well as the ever-expanding PDGA membership. Swope has played host to many PDGA Major and National Tour events, and the realized economic impact alone should be enough to convince the KC officers that it is an important inclusion in the community. Its relevance in disc golf history can not be understated, as it has produced many World Champions and Disc Golf Hall of Fame members. It is a course that many desire to visit because of it's lure and grand reputation. For the sake of the local disc golfers and also the 100,000+ PDGA membership base, please consider relocating future projects to accommodate this historic and beautiful disc golf course.

Save the Kansas City disc golf.

Please do not build the animal shelter on this piece of ground. I am sure the City of Kansas City owns many other acres of ground close to existing utilities. Thanks.

This course is a regional and national destination for disc golfers. I spend money in KC when I go, and I travel to KC because I love playing disc golf at this course.

There should be a way to have both

Im all for no-kill animal shelters. The people do deserve the afore mentioned information.

I’ve played this course since the early 80’s and it’s still one of the best around. Take part of the ball golf course if you must!

I understand that a large donation was given for the much needed no-kill animal shelter. I applaud such a donation and giving back to the community. If my information is correct the donor directed that the shelter be built on location at the park in the space that is the disc golf course (a public space). I do not understand the motivation for designating that it displace the iconic and historical disc golf course. If the donation required such a move it is difficult to applaud such motivation and giving back in this way. It is my understanding that the donation given will not cover the full cost of building the shelter or maintaining it. I also do not understand why the city would allow a private individual to donate money with such strings attached to it (if this is true). The good people of KC voted in favor of the project and the funds necessary to complete the project and will be the ones who continue to fund it. Is it really the will of all of those who voted for the shelter to displace the iconic course if it really is not necessary? It would be helpful to understand why the donor, and possibly the city believe that this is the only property that could serve this need. I understand that the donor has since passed away, perhaps the family of the donor could help us understand. Again, I applaud the donation for something that is greatly needed, I just do not understand the motivation for requiring the location if other locations could work. I hope that a compromise can be reached that serves all of those interested in this matter. Me and my family enjoy playing disc golf at this park and love animals.

Save the disc golf course... this is a hugely growing sport.

Why would this be acceptable to ruin one thing for the other. Why not coexist?

It's a big park. We're glad to share. We'd just like to save a local landmark.

Keep the park

I, too, am an animal lover, but I don't understand why a facility like this should even be located in Swope Park. Parks are generally defined as recreational use areas. The no-kill shelter does not fit that definition and what one would think belongs in a park. Can the current location not be expanded and impoved? From the comments, you can see the disc golf course not only adds to the city's impressive reputation, it also undeniably generates revenue for the city.
