valedictorian speeches have been a tradition 4 years this is unacceptable! given the late notice both students should be allowed to speak.

Valedictorians should speak at graduation. To have the highest GPA after 4 years deserves a few moments to speak. Having "auditions" for speakers is so ridiculous. Have we diluted education so much that we can't allow the one whose average rose to the absolute top to speak? I'm disappointed, Freedom HS

She earned this! I've never heard of a valedictorian not giving a speech. I think graduating #1 in her class is a commendable accomplishment and allowing her to give a speech is well deserved.

Even Merriam-Webster's definition of a valedictorian states:
": the student who has the highest grades in a graduating class and who gives a speech at graduation ceremonies."
If you want to hold auditions to ensure the speaker really WANTS to speak, then this should be IN ADDITION TO offering the "true" valedictorian the opportunity to speak, as well (on an optional basis).
