Auditions for this speech should be how hard you work throughout your 4 years of high school and you have already proven that you've worked hard. You should be given the only speech. Good luck!

As someone who graduated from Freedom and has attended at least four other ceremonies, I am appalled that this decision was made. The valedictorians have worked extremely hard and become an integral part of the Freedom community, and they must be given the opportunity to speak about it. What is most disturbing is the administration's failure to communicate with Shannon about this decision they have made until this extremely late point in time.

This is unbelievable! To earn the spot of valedictorian requires years of dedication. Shannon has definitely earned the privilege of speaking to her graduating class at graduation. If they want to have additional speeches, that makes sense. I spoke at my graduation as a class officer. But it certainly wasn't IN PLACE of the valedictorian speech. That is a long-standing tradition that rewards the years of effort it takes to earn that spot. It would serve the administration and decision-makers well to look up the literal meaning of valedictorian (val·e·dic·to·ri·an ˌvalədikˈtôrēən/ noun, a student, typically having the highest academic achievements of the class, who delivers the valedictory at a graduation ceremony.)
I hope that they have the good sense to reverse this decision before it is too late...

Shannon, you deserve this. If FHS really wants another speaker, it should be an addition to yours instead of a replacement entirely. You work so hard and are such a fantastic person; I'm proud of your accomplishments and your steadfast courage in situations like this. Excited to hear about how your speech goes! ;)

The idea of ye valedictorian not giving a speech is ludicrous! You work hard, you are number one, you deserve the right to speak and inspire your fellow classmates and not have no nobody do it on your behalf. Rhe principal and Freedom High School should be ashamed to have even been in the same room as the people that came to this conclusion. LET HER SPEAK!!!!

It is not only the right it is the literaly definition of the word valedictorian. It breaks down as "to say farewell" and is given as the last speech called the valedictory. You can't call someone the valedictorian if they aren't allowed to say farewell, which again is the literal translation of valedictorian. Hence it is a right that is earned. Anything less and the people at websters need to change the dictionary definition
