I was born and raised in Martin County and graduated from MCHS. The pool at MCHS has been a part of my life from summer camps in my youth, to swimming and diving lessons, followed by participation and spectating in MCHS swimming sports. The pool has had and continues to have a positive impact on people’s lives in the area. I still smile with good memories when I walk up to the pool to watch my son, a 11th grade state-level swimmer, swim his events. Moreover, Coach Jim McCombs has dedicated his career to not only the swimming program but ranks of kids that have gone through his program over the years. The positive impact he, his fellow coaches, and the program have had on all of those kids is immeasurable.
Outside of the why the pool is important to me, the pool supports the entire community. It is used for club swimming programs for both youth and adults. There is already a shortage of pools in the district. Currently, JBHS and SFHS both swim at Sailfish. It simply doesn’t have the capacity to support yet another school and club swimmers that use the MCHS pool daily.
If the motive for closing the pool is based on costs of maintenance and operation I urge the school board to look elsewhere for cost savings. The pool is too large of an asset to too many residents of Martin County to be closed. Additionally, the cost of closure would be so great the buy back on that spend would take years. MCHS is known across the district as having the strongest swimming program. That’s not only because of the dedication of the coaches, but the ease of access to a pool that’s on property. Please keep this pool open and allow this pool and what it brings to the school and community to impact the lives of others the way it has impacted both me and my kids.

Please do not close this pool! It is a valuable asset to Martin County. Anyone who swims or has children who swim know that we have far too few pools already! Sailfish Splash is a great pool BUT it is already in high demand for numerous high level meets and it would be detremental to the Martin County High Shcool team as well as the Martin County USA Swimming Club Team.

I wish every high school had a pool. I took lifeguarding at the MCHS pool and worked as a lifeguard in the summers. This pool is an asset to the school and the community.

Please save the pool - it is greatly needed and utilized by the community. Swimming is an exercise children will use for their entire lives. Consider all the sports that cause lifelong injuries, have expensive equipment, and only are played during school years. However, swimming in my opinion is a sport that should be supported and encourage all to participate in for it’s many lifelong benefits.

This pool is an asset to the school and to the community. Much more will be spent in getting rid of it than it costs to run it. You cannot have four high schools, two club teams, one pre-team, two dive teams and a synchronized swim team at Sailfish all at the same time and expect the kids to succeed. There are over 80 kids swimming at the Dick Wells Training Center DAILY. There are Master's swimmers in the morning. There are 11 practices a week for these children. That is NOT available at Sailfish Splash. We need to keep this pool OPEN.

The school board tried to close the pool when my daughter, Aubrey, was a club and MCHS team swimmer over 5 years ago. I still have the ‘Save Our Pool’ shirt with the long list of organizations that utilize the pool. This pool is needed not just for our schools but for the entire community.

10 Reasons to Keep Dick Wells Pool OPEN
1. The Dick Wells Community Pool at MCHS is a very valuable asset that needs to be protected and appreciated. To replace the pool in today’s dollars would cost about $8MM. Why let such an expensive asset go?
2. The pool is in good shape with new heaters, lane lines and recently added score board and covered bleachers.
3. This issue was asked and answered in the summer of 2013. The community overwhelmingly came out to support the pool and the Board decided in the face of more significant budget issues to keep the Pool open. The Board understood the value of the pool to its students and the Community and decided the pool was not the place to save less than $200,000 in its annual budget. Now, the community is coming out in even greater numbers to support keeping this pool open.
4. If the Board elects to close the pool, their actions cannot be easily undone or without great expense. We urge the Board to consider finding cost reductions in programs that can easily be reinstated when funding improves and that do not require additional expenditures (demolishing the existing buildings, removal or filling in the existing concrete pool, etc.).
5. If the District does close the pool and physically fills in or demolishes the existing pool equipment, buildings, etc., the District will be forced to spend millions of dollars to undo their actions.
6. All of the High Schools in the District have Varsity boys & girls swimming and diving programs.
7. The District owns multiple stadiums, gymnasiums, baseball fields, softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, etc, It is not unreasonable to have a pool for its students (athletes, summer camps, etc.)
8. Sailfish is already crowded, especially during the high school swim season with three swim teams (JBHS, SFHS & TCA) and two dive teams already using all of the available lanes. Forcing another two teams into Sailfish would require some teams to practice
