Petition to the Government of Canada
We, the undersigned residents of Canada, wish to bring your attention the following:
Whereas the entire media industry in Canada is suffering from a massive, but temporary decline advertising revenue;
Whereas the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) receives 40 percent of its funding through said advertising revenues and 60 percent from government allotments;
Whereas the CBC is experiencing a revenue shortfall of $171 million dollars and has requested a bridge loan from future CBC budgets to cover the temporary shortfall;
Whereas the CBC requires additional money to protect local programming on radio and television;
Whereas the news, sports, arts, culture, and entertainment programming of the CBC is an essential service for communities in Northwestern Ontario;
Therefore, we the undersigned call upon the Government of Canada to extend bridge financing as requested by the CBC in order to maintain the volume and quality of local programming and prevent job losses in Northwestern Ontario.

Please note: You must sign a physical petition sheet to be included in the petition being sent to the House of Commons.
The level of traction this initiative has gained confirms that our regional programming is a priority for the government to address. I am now finalizing the formal request for the bridge loan to ensure our local broadcasting jobs remain protected.

Canada needs impartial, publicly funded news media more than ever. "Legacy media" serves as an old guard of the fifth estate, a backup system for the filtering out of misinformation. Defunding or privatizing this institution will further contribute to the state of "post-truth" informational chaos which we currently find ourselves in.
