Save California State Highway 174

"Improvement" will bring more traffic volume, higher speeds, more accidents, thereby necessitating further "improvements".

This project is completely unnecessary and will dramatically alter the scenic beauty of the area. Please preserve #174 !

We live on Highway 174. Caltrans proposed "fix" makes no sense and there are less intrusive solutions to their concerns.

Absolutely must save our most beautiful highway 174. have Caltrans spend their money elsewhere.

The "improvements" are a waste of taxpayer money, would create more traffic, result in more noise, and destroy critical ecological habitat. There is no advantage that would result from this project and many clear disadvantages.

My husband and I do not believe that widening this road thus encouraging greater speeds will increase safety.

What are the Cal Trans leaders thinking, anyway? If they want to make certain curves more safe, they only need to put in rumble strips as one approaches the curves in question. This would cost a fraction of the proposed project and be just as safe. It would save lives and also trees. As it is now, 174 is calm and scenic and a joy to drive on.

This project needs to have a thorough environmental impact assessment completed with special focus given to the affects on protected, threatened and endangered species's habitats.

CalTrans has not provided credible justification for this over-engineered project. Dropping 2 miles of super-highway on a country lane will make it LESS safe. It's not needed, it's not wanted, and it's a waste of funds that are needed elsewhere (ie, Hwy 49).

Do not destroy our scenic highway for some manufactured excuse to. Speed enforcement is the answer.

The entire length of Hwy 174 has curves, do you plan to someday straighten the entire highway? This Caltrans plan is unnecessary, crippling to homeowners and drivers dealing with construction nightmares and a big waste of tax dollars. Please use the money for signage and more CHP monitoring.

I agree with others that widening the road will result in faster speeds.

Widening the road will just make people drive faster. Encouraging safety at current would help. Ticketing speeding drivers may help to reduce accidents.

I have lived in Chicago Park since 1990 and drive 174 at least twice a day. My favorite part about living were I do is driving highway 174 just the way it currently is. The beauty of driving this highway is not like any other road I've driven. It makes me feel serene... it is like driving through a beautiful picture. I can count on my one hand the number of accidents that have accrued over the past 27 years and those could have been avoided if the drivers were adhering to the speed limit! I simply ask that you DO NOT touch this beauty.... leave Hwy. 174 alone!

Reduce speeding with better signage

Enforce speed limits. Don’t take peoples land. Leave the trees be!

I chose to take a cut in pay some 40 years ago in order to get out of the city and live in the beautiful Grass Valley area. Since then, I've driven on Highway 174 nearly every day, and love its small-town character. I see no need to destroy that character simply because of a few careless drivers. Those who wish to speed can take Highway 49. Although I appreciate CalTrans' desire to "improve" our roads, I feel that its engineers exhibit a history of overlooking what those of us who actually drive those roads appreciate as "beauty." Please, CalTrans, I feel that this proposed project will irreversibly and unnecessarily change the character of our favorite highway. Our taxpayer money would be better spent elsewhere, or on a few “Slow Curve” signs.
