Save California State Highway 174

It's just too bad that this highway wasn't given Historic status long ago.

While cities around the country are redeveloping their urban centers with people as their focus, Nevada County seems to be going in the opposite direction by putting cars before community. Stope expanding. This is Nevada County, not LA.

Absolutely ridiculous. Widen the Highway for safety and then have traffic go even faster. I drive 174 every day on my commute and I cant tell you how many cars and trucks traveling at very high speeds have crossed the double yellow in front of me. This is an absolute waste of taxpayer funds and I personally strongly oppose it!

For this beautiful land, for a place to give voice, for this precious unique community, I give thanks.

Make that section 35 mph and most of the problem will be solved.

Let’s get it done right

When considering a project that would potentially affect the aesthetics, property value and quality of so many people's lives, a much more focused and current study to weigh the need over negative impacts must be mandatory. I drive the entire section of hwy 174 frequently and I don't understand choosing this section in particular, over others where more safety issues might exist, or not. When utilizing statistics to substantiate a need, it should be necessary to cosider the details of cause and effect. And those statistics should be based only on facts that have been determined from a time frame that is current and pertinent to the proposed project.

Get people to SLOW DOWN! Widening the road will only allow them to go faster. We live here. They don’t! Don’t allow this absurd project to ruin our beautiful countryside and turn it into yet another suburban speedway.

There are plenty of places they can destroy. Leave ours alone. We live @ 174 and You Bet. Don't need Caltrans here.

Making the road more straight and widening is only going to provide the opportunity for drivers' to speed more. It will not help the situation. Also going through with this plan is going to cause major traffic delays making drivers' even more ticked off and want to road rage!

We, as Nevada County residents, the majority of us anyways, choose to live here for its unique and diverse environment and stunning beauty that we all call home. I would like to keep this short and (not so) sweet. Costing taxpayer 28.5 million to widen a stretch of road less than 2 miles raises many questions and concerns. Psychologically, it's only natural for any driver to automatically drive faster when more than one lane exists, thus, posing a serious safety concern. For cal trans to proceed with their plans to widen hwy 174 is inherently problematic. We understand that road construction is imperative to not only the income for cal trans workers source of income and public safety although doing so on hwy 174 is not practical. Not only will more vehicle accidents occur, there will be more severe and potentially deadly accidents. Further and for most, the landscape will be permanently altered and will soon mimic hwy 49 to auburn which has been coined the term "blood alley" for the deadly, high speed crashes. My next issue I have with the cal trans plans is the section of road they chose to widen and cause 1800 trees to be marked for logging. Ironic, is the fact that the 1.9 miles they are targeting is the threshold of the largest coniferous and deciduous trees along 174 including, but not limited to Oak, maple, Madrone Pine, Cedar, Fir and even Sequiadendron Giganteum; also referred to as mountainous redwoods or as John Muir nicknamed as "Big Tree." As an environmental philosopher, naturalist and author, legend, John Muir (1838-1914) has protested to protect what is now one of our nation's gem, "Sequoia Narional Park." If John Muir could have success with preservation, I am certain that with enough of our communal voices are addressed, We can preserve our little gem that exists in out back yard, better know to cal trans as the hwy 174 project. Without your voice, we will soon witness the transition of disaster. Please preserve hwy 174.

Almost daily, when I leave the stop sign at You Bet & 174 to go toward GV, having looked very carefully to verify no vehicles are approaching, I’m almost hit by a speeding car. Imagine the accidents that will take place if Cal Trans follows through on this ludicrous plan.

My favorite stretch of Hwy 174 is just where they plan to straighten it! Why encourage higher speeds? It will never be a fast hwy...it's a 45 mph road and much less in many places. It is safer that way. This project is a waste of money. I'm betting the trucking industry is behind this. 49 is for that.

BIG MONEY MAKING FARCE!!!Please SAVE my highway and HALT this action.That's whats gonna save lives....not widening it to increase SPEED resulting in BAD WREAKS.I OPPOSE the CAL-TRANS money making greedy project 100 %.

This is nothing but a BIG MONEY MAKER for CAL-TRANS!!! It will only encourage faster driving making our highway more dangerous!! I am 100% AGAINST this very unnescesary project !!!!!!!!!!

Put radar speed signs up in this area as a test run and see if it slows drivers down.

Keep rural roads rural. The foothills are starting to be overrun with development. Don't allow this beautiful area to be forever changed for the worse.

This appears to be a solution looking for a problem.
