Save Duffy Field

I grew up in the neighborhood and the park was an invaluable part of my childhood and is now a part of my niece and nephew's lives, Save Duffy field!

I played at Duffy Field as a toddler with my Mom. My son played there too. I am 73 years old now and my son is 48. Please leave our memories alone.

We love this open natural space. It is a tremendously viable and valuable part of our neighborhood for our children, pets and recharging with natural beauty.

Please save this field! The wooded area can prevent flooding but the city could clean/clear out that wooded area too to make it look better and still preserve it as flood prevention.

Leave this park alone!

As a resident of the neighborhood surrounding Rockwood Field off Chandler Street, I witnessed the City and WSU take our beloved park land and turn it into a baseball diamond for use by the WSU baseball team, and some inter-league playing during the summer. Almost the entire area is now a fenced and locked baseball diamond being used only a few weeks a year by a very limited category of users. All the wonderful citizens' activities mentioned in this petition have been blocked, except for just being able to walk around the baseball field perimeter. There were multiple Phases in the Rockwood Field Improvement Master Plan, such as exercise stations, a children's playground, etc., but all of those Phases were conveniently suspended once the baseball field was completed. None of the other attractions came to fruition. In addition, larger diameter drainpipes were installed, allowing more water to flow into the brook there, and since then there has been flooding in the basements of houses on Chicopee and Glendale Streets when it rains. They took the park from the taxpaying neighbors (and the robins and the monarch butterflies) and turned it into into a ball field for WSU, an institution which pays zero taxes.

we need to preserve this green space.

Duffy Field is vital to our community. I am a Worcester Public Schools teacher and I am all for school sports, but not at the expense of a green space being taken away from the community at large. And not when the intent is to replace it with components not friendly to the environment - artificial turf and a parking lot.

Please save Duffy Park

This park land was given to the past & future members of the Newton Square residents. The City shall not break the intention of the original terms of the gift.

I would love to see Duffy Park left as it is or used for concert in the park or and water spray park like Shrewsbury St. has.

I grew up on Duffy Field in the 70’s. It was an integral part of my life and the lives of dozens of my friends. Please keep it as it is!

I support saving Duffy Field!

A small city park that would be totally decimated with a full size football field . I lived right across from there for 20 years @ 22 Suburban rd. Also structurally the soils that make up the field is peat moss and and the surface of any kind of field would always settle drastically one way or another. Just ask any home owner adjacent to the park how the foundation’s of their homes are.

Preserving the limited green space on the west side is important for ALL residents. Special interest groups should investigate a myriad of options available in the area.

This is a residential area that would suffer from the addition of high volume traffic for a parking lot and loud noise and bright lights at night that would surely come from the addition of a football field. Also to note this is a populated area of orthodox Jewish residents that have a school next to Duffy and all residents would suffer from games and practices that would occur on Saturdays which are sabbath. Midland street school also uses this field for trips for elementary students and they do not have a playground or a lot of space at their school and they benefit from using the field. To take this land for ONE high school at the cost of elementary students health, an entire religious community and all nearby residents, would be so selfish and cruel of this city.

Duffy Field / Wetherell Park is a treasured neighborhood oasis and should remain so. Adding a football field, lighting, and a parking lot will ruin it.

It seems the City has turned inadequate planning for the new Doherty HS into a crisis for Duffy Field. We should not have to sacrifice our neighborhood’s open space as a consequence of that poor planning. I am in favor of the do nothing or do minimal option. Keep the Park as largely, informal open space.

Please don’t waste tax money destroying a nice neighborhood and green space by adding plastic grass, intrusive lighting and more pavement.
