Davis House as LLC

We as a community are better than this. Come on Wheaton Admin.

The petition was created as a result of statements that were mentioned by Reslife during a meeting that occurred between Res Life and the Davis Exec board. These statements are what was mentioned in our petition. We as a house felt that the removal of our home was very sudden and out of the blue. The house was told during the meeting that we didn’t fulfill our requirements however on what ground? Last semester alone Davis had done 6 events, which shows a lot of growth in comparison to previous years. It seems that the house was always going to be removed and the lateness of the application was used as leverage to push forward with the cancellation. The house’s intention is not to cause any issues but to be heard instead of being seen as falsely advertising and “bonkers”. We wanted to be considered and recognized instead of having a band-aid ripped off without any warning. After a follow-up meeting with res life after the petition was put out, they retracted most of their statements and clarified how they would be moving forward with the house. There was a clear miscommunication between Res life and the house regarding various changes and statements. Whether Res Life changed their statements after seeing the petition is unclear. However, we needed to make our point about keeping the culture, environment, and traditions of the house the same through the use of this petition. Davis is willing to cooperate with Global Ed and Res Life as long as the nature of the house is kept intact. - Davis House

They’re not taking away the space, it will remain on campus and continue being a sanctuary for students. It has been recognized that affinity spaces are crucial for student success, which I’m pretty sure is why the LLC was created. The students did not even reapply to have the house continue, so they really can’t be that surprised that the structure is changing.

There literally IS an alternative. Res Life created an LLC so they can continue their mission. They didn’t reapply, so why would they continue being a theme house? Res Life feels passionate about allowing them to continue as an entity on campus, and has created a new way for them to succeed. I’m happy to see that they went the extra mile to propose a new LLC so Davis could continue having a positive impact on the Wheaton community instead of letting it fade away.

Can’t believe what a skewed story has been presented here, this is the second year in a row Davis House didn’t fulfill its requirements as a theme house, and they did not even send in a reapplication this year. This shouldn’t / didn’t come as a surprise to any of them, as there was a meeting with the leadership of the house that explained the new idea. Davis house isn’t being “cancelled”. Since students in the house weren’t able to fulfill the requirements, this new idea has been created to let Davis’ mission stay alive. The LLC isn’t “wellness housing” it’s purpose is to allow programming with the houses theme, but use a connection with Global Ed to ensure the mission is actually fulfilled. The things said in this story are high key BONKERS and untrue. Sad to see all of our peers automatically believe it after reading a single story... So yeah, Davis diDNT EVEN REAPPLY so don’t be like this smH

Davis house is a haven!

That is absurd. Theme houses exist to be for and by the students. We need more of them not less .

Living at Davis house senior year was the highlight of my time at Wheaton and the community and friends I made through Davis was the only thing keeping me from transferring schools. It is an inclusive, welcoming space to all students and it would be a shame to get rid of it.

This is a removal of a safe space for international students. I view this as a clear message stating that spaces that don’t directly benefit American students, or aren’t primarily made for American students aren’t valued on campus. That act in itself is anti-American and America is strengthened through the support of International bodies. This is wrong and we shouldn’t have to sign a petition to have a space and belong on campus.

Davis House was a really important part of my time at Wheaton. I lived there for two years and can't quantify how much I learned from the diverse community of students that I shared a home with.

This is the place I 1st felt at home at Wheaton, I had a pretty bad experience my 1st semester and when I moved to Davis the spring of my freshmen year, I really like it. It's not fair that Wheaton wants to take that away to students like myself. I would be living there right now if I wasn't an RA. What particularly bothers me with this is the fact that there is no alternative and to me just shows that the school values their overall outlook and not for the students.

Davis House has been an integral part during my time at Wheaton. Memories made there will never be forgotten. Being a part of the international community has allowed and taught me to see things from so many different perspectives. Save Davis House.

Davis has been, is currently, and should always be a family in the Wheaton community. We can't let its impact and its legacy be erased.

While I did not officially live at Davis House during my time at Wheaton, it was most certainly a place of sanctuary and acceptance. It was a place I could have intellectually stimulating conversations, embrace cultures, and feel safe. Students who have embraced Davis as their home and have such positive impacts on the Wheaton community BECAUSE of this space. It’s a disgrace for Wheaton to be tearing apart spaces for students in the minority. Whether it’s race or citizenship, we are living in a critical time where students need these safe spaces where an affinity is shared. Thank you for listening to my TedTalk. Goodbye.
