PETITION CALLING ON ACTION ON DARFUR BY THE SAVE DARFUR KENYA COALITION Preamble: The intractable conflict in Darfur has so far claimed over 400,000 lives of mainly women, children and the aged, displaced 2.5 million people and rendered 4 million people destitute and helpless dependants on foreign aid in Sudan. Kenya and the world have watched in silence as this 21st century genocide has been perpetrated. It is time to break this silence by urging immediate action on Darfur The Save Darfur Kenya Coalition therefore urges for action by the Kenyan Government, its people and the International Community in the following areas. 1. To halt the conflict and create conditions for sustainable peace in Darfur:

The Centre for Minority Rights Development (CEMIRIDE) interest in Darfur emerges out of its focus on addressing human rights violations of minorities and indigenous communities in Kenya and Africa. Genocide in all its manifestation is of all human rights violations, the most gross. During the 39th session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights in Banjul, the Gambia, last May, CEMIRIDE worked with other NGOs to develop a resolution on Darfur which was submitted to the Commission for adoption. The resolution urged the African Union to inter alia deploy a military force to halt the carnage in Darfur. As a result the union did take some minimalist action. CEMIRIDE is a member of the Save Darfur Coalition which is agitating for urgent action to stave the carnage that is ongoing
