I do genuinely spend my time in niche forests/prairies around the Chicagoland area and I had ABSOLUTELY no idea about this place. Good cause.

I recently attended an open house at Crow Island Woods. What a beautiful place, and how special it is to have an actual natural remnant of what this area was like before modern settlement! DON'T SCREW IT UP!

If creating wet lands were simply for the purpose of collecting excess rain water, I would not have a problem with that.
However all the lawn fertilizers, road debris, insecticides including animal and bird waste will collect on these wet lands, basically creating a smelly toxic waste land that will smell like the Des Plaines River.
No Thanks!

This is an historic moment for Village of Winnetka. We must act to preserve the beauty of this rare sanctuary for generations to come.

The original charter called for the preservation of those pristine woods "for all time." 'Nuff said. There are certain bells you cannot un-ring.

Alternative options to the flooding problems should be thoroughly evaluated. I do not feel that has happened a this time.

Having grown up in Winnetka and watched it change, this is a defining moment. Will Winnetka turn into a modern, forward-looking town, or will it go down the path of environmental and community destruction? There are many solutions to this problem, and many of them require decentralized operations--lots of grass roots mobilization and planning. But the village has only considered at top-down, old-school engineering approach. With so much money and so many smart people here, I have a hard time believing this is the best we can do. I hope we can all come together to work on better solutions, not just to this issue but to the many that Winnetka is shamefully behind on (e.g., composting, waste management).

My husband and my daughter
both went to Crow Island School. There are many happy memories for both of them in exploring the natural habitat of Crow Island Woods. Very few elementary schools have this lovely nature preserve in their back yard. It should not become a wetland, but should survive another 100 years as
a beautiful area for teaching about nature, and as a habitat for the birds that frequent it! In addition, a wetland would attract mosquitos which would be a health hazard to our children!

There are alternative solutions to the flooding problem in Winnetka - Strand is all about grey infrastructure when there are many feasible green infrastructure options available!
