The Brookline public schools administration is sending a terrible message to both its students and the community at large with its unconscionable actions in this case. Such outstanding educators are hard to come by, and we can't afford to lose this one, particularly over such a trivial "infraction".

Mr Chen was an awesome teacher and he really got me interested in history. I don't think I've had a better teacher in my 9 years at Driscoll or at bhs, and it would be ridiculous to fire him for such a small thing like this. I hope he gets to stay at Driscoll and inspire many more students over the coming years.

I hope that this matter is resolved quickly and in a just manner. Based on the publicly reported details, I fully support reinstatement of Mr. Chen to his teaching position at Driscoll.

Assuming there is not more to the facts, this sounds like an unjustified, ridiculous and wasteful disciplinary action. It is the definition of BS.

I don't even go to this school, or know this teacher... But a single swear, "BS"? It's not even fully spelled out, and we students are exposed to much worse in life. Plus, this teacher sounds like an amazing teacher that I would want.

Mr. Chen has changed my life and educational experience. He made me see why history was important. Chen Doge loves candy, and was the best part of my final years at Driscoll. Oh and he can political rap battle like a beast. He is a nerd when it comes to History, but guess what? We all became nerds at History because he showed us the beauty of looking at ancient civilizations and seeing that is isn't dust, but a brilliantly bright web of stories.

Mr. Chen changed my daughter's perspective toward school and learning. First time in her life she felt free to express herself outside her family, just because of Mr. Chen's class and after school club.

It's not just the material. It's the delivery, the empathy, the creativity, the authenticity, the accessibility, the tenacity--it's "Chen-the tacitly"....and it is one-in-a-billion, once-in-a-lifetime "Chen-tastic". A wise person once said "ifyou want to teach a man to sail, you must first teach him to love the ocean". The material may be great, the sub may be great, but the connection is irreplaceable...the best nanny can be provided, but the child still looks for their primary caregiver...it's like that. In other words, for this school family, "CHEN. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE". #savechen

Driscoll School needs mentoring!! Driscoll School continues to hire young staff and does NOTHING to provide mentoring, guidance and support. If this was a corporation, its executive team would be under attack by the board and shareholders for complete lack of management!

Mr. Chen was without a doubt the most positive and significantly impactful teacher in my sons educational experience to date. Mr. Chen reignited my son's waning love of learning and passion for school.

This can't even be a question. Firing Mr. Chen would be like shutting down the school. Everybody looks up to Larry; even lots of little kids look forward to having him as a teacher—I have: ever since he came to Driscoll, when I was in 5th grade. I hope Dr. Lupini can see through such a reason to fire a favorite.

Mr. Chen is an extraordinary teacher who brings fresh excitement for learning, inquisitiveness about and interest in current events, and a new critical-perspectives approach to history. The discussions that happen in the classroom with Mr. Chen are also a foundation for conversations we have in our family about issues related to social justice, politics, history and current events.
To lose Mr. Chen is potentially to lose this spark of excitement about learning and constructive engagement with real, present-day issues. To put it bluntly: Mr. Chen doesn't talk down to the kids or allow the curriculum to be flat; he finds ways to make it relevant and meaningful for his students. There are not many teachers who can communicate with middle-school kids in language that connects. Larry Chen is one of them. We know that a teacher like this can transform a child's relationship to a subject for the rest of his or her life. Save this teacher!

The Administration of the PSB does need cleaning house. Lupini's leaving is welcome news for many. As parents we do want creative, engaging, motivating educators and leaders.
