Firing this teacher will justify the fact that public school is only mediocre. Mr. Chen is taking a risk in his innovation method. He could just use the state standards etc. created 20-30 years ago. If you don't see his effort, you are blind.

My sister is one of his students and I myself have seen the change he's created in her and her friends. Losing Larry would not only crush the students, but would also be a loss in their academic motivation and experience.

The community has spoken. We have made our wishes to reinstate Larry Chen loud and clear. Our voices must not be ignored.

The school committee should weigh all the allegation in terms of impact on the students and the quality of their eduction, NOT in terms of outdated committee procedures. The committee should not be influenced by a fellow teacher's jealousy of Chen's success.

Larry Chen is what's right about education: he has inspired his students to be activist. The ridiculous actions taken against him are what's all wrong about education. There isn't room enough here to enumerate all that's wrong with the decision to fire him. I am a university professor of several decades. This is one of the most shameful things I've ever seen.

Can you imagine what bad reputation Driscoll will get if he gets fired? We were on 5 news channels. Including many articles about it. If they fire him, driscoll will be known as "The school who fired Mr. Chen" and "the school where i don't want to send my kids because of how they treat their teachers." I go to this school, and to be honest, It's embarrasing. It's pretty pathetic how he gets fired for something so STUPID!!! I know there was more to the story, but nothing criminal or preverted. The students involved in the events that led him to be fired gave speeches at the meeting yesterday about how little it affected them and how dumb it is. Just don't fire him okay? when was the last time an online petition recieved 323 signatures and 153 comments for ONE teacher? Or when was the last time Driscoll was on 5 different news channels for ONE teacher? Clearly this teacher is very important and it would be unbelievably stupid to fire him. Thank u.

I also shiver as I think about the chilling effect and the far reaching consequences of this disciplinary overreach. Will teachers now be afraid of teaching anything that could be deemed controversial? What will they self-censor? Will the most visionary ones avoid puritan Brookline? Will our students in the end be as insulated from difficult truths as they are in Texas and Colorado? All for what seems to be a victimless "offence" to one sore ear...

I don't understand why this choice is only up to one person. The superintendent. That reminds me of a monarchy from the 1600s. One person gets to decide. He probably will only care about his opinion and not anyone elses. We should have a vote instead of just ONE GUY DECIDING. It would be more fair. The majority of the people say they want mr chen BACK! listen to them!

Embarrassing. I would not send my children to a place like Driscoll if this is any example of how they treat their educators.

We have 2 kids going to Driscoll. Would hate to lose a great teacher over something as inconsequential as this "offense".

Last week a known 4th grade bully received a morning of in-school suspension, during which he had recess to play soccer. His offense was pulling down the pants and underwear of a mentally handicapped classmate in front of the entire class. The bully's parents are white pediatricians who are friendly with the principal. Is that how proportionate punishment is dealt?

The dismissal of Larry Chen smacks at the very core of whats wrong with the overly sensitive state of schools and society.

I just sent the following letter to the chair of the Brookline School Committee: "Hello Susan, I would appreciate it if you would share this email with your co-members. I have to tell you I was shocked to read the story about the dismissal of Mr. Chen, based on the account in the Globe. I will definitely be attending and participating at the next meeting. I am generally very proud to live in Brookline. Both of my kids attended the Brookline Schools (“Pierce Is For People”). I taught history for 35 years at Lincoln-Sudbury and worked for Tufts for 6 years as a practicum supervisor for student teachers. As both a parent and teacher, I feel I know the value of a great teacher. They are precious and scarce. Mr. Chen appears to have been a memorable teacher and person. I emphasize the word “person.” As a person myself, I can attest that, sadly, we people are not perfect. Here is an inspiring and inspired teacher and you are letting him go because of slight lapse of language after school? What ever happened to warnings? And the superintendent who is suddenly leaving his post will be deciding whether to finalize the decision? Please tell me, reassure me, that there is more to this. Feeling disturbed on Brook St., Best, Bill"

Mr. Chen has been a great inspiration to learn history and the concept. Without him it's not fun and something not to look forward to. Overall, I hope the petition helps and all the people that supported him works.
