Save Rutgersfest
On April 18, 2011 Rutgers University held their annual end-of-the-year celebration called Rutgersfest. This event consists of a concert with well-known and up-coming artists along with food and games and is open to the "Rutgers community and their guests". However at this year's festivities, there was a large ratio of non-Rutgers students to the student body thus a larger group of individuals that the police could not control nor even wanted to control. This led to multiple altercations later that night on campus which were caused by these non-Rutgers individuals.
In the end President McCormick cancelled Rutgersfest altogether due to pressure from the New Brunswick Police Department Director.
We, as the Rutgers community, are fighting back against this decision to cancel Rutgersfest. It is not the Students of this university who are at fault, but rather the New Brunswick Police and Rutgers University Police who did not plan accordingly, and moreorless DID NOT act accordingly.
This petition's main objectives are to:
- Resume Rutgersfest to its annual occurrance
- Make this event open to Rutgers students only (we will work out the non-Rutgers individuals invited by RU students in the near future)
- Have security check points at the entrance of the festival and have security check: Rutgers IDs, government IDs, bags, suspicious behavior, etc.
