Shark finning refers to the removal and retention of shark fins and discarding the rest of the fish. Because the shark meat is considered worth much less than the fins, the sharks are often thrown back into the ocean still alive and left to die or eaten as they are unable to move. Shark finning alone has helped to rapidly decline global shark populations.
