William Blake, one of England’s greatest artists and poets, must most definitely be honoured and celebrated in his home city of London. It is our duty to respect and recognise the invaluable cultural asset William Blake has gifted England. Not honouring and failing to harness the enormous benefits, both cultural and monetary, that would be generated and that England would be blessed with, would equate to the Austrian cities of Vienna and Salzburg, not honouring Mozart. I grew up in Vienna and have visited Salzburg many times, both these cities owe so much of their cultural identity and wealth to the artist. The cultural and financial reward for investing in Vienna and Salzburg’s connection to Mozart, is incalculable and Austria will continue to reap the benefits of its investment and celebration of him, forever.
Likewise, we in England, have such an opportunity at hand. William Blake, a visionary, artist and poet of great depth and revelation, more mysterious and spiritual and yet to be discovered by many, is the golden egg in our hand that will keep giving, keep blessing and we would be foolish not to know its worth.
For those who are yet to be convinced of the great opportunity that will generate both material and immaterial richness and awaken a light in London, let us take a leap of faith and discover how far and wide the echoes of Jerusalem will reach. Let us observe how many languages and locations around the globe, will greet us with the sublime lines of ‘Auguries of Innocence’, and if it be none, then at least, let these words greet the visitors of London. Let his words ring in the streets and greens and schools of William Blake’s London. Let the mysterious artist’s wisdom and visual depictions be absorbed into the hearts and consciousness of London’s inhabitants and make us proud and grateful to be living in the company of such a remarkable and evolved personality.
