Childhood memories of the WACO..many Ohana members employed, whistle blowing, cane burning meant "black snow", train #7 in the park, big turns haulers and seeing smoke from the stack, Waipahu has their smokestack landmark and so should Waialua!!! It was a big mistake that the the towering pineapple in Iwalei was taken down representing the Dole Cannery.

I was born, raised, and lived in Waialua. My family immigrated from Portugal and worked for the sugar plantation from almost it's beginning to when it closed. Please preserve our heritage.

The sugar mills are part of Hawai'i's history. It was an integral part of our past. My grandfather worked at several different sugar mills. It's as if our history is being wiped out One by one by money hungry people.

I grew up in Waialua whe the sugar mill was active. When i go home thats the first thing i see and remember lots of childhood memeories. Alot has changed in my home town but that is 1 of the few things that still remain, just a smoke stack.

This smokestack speaks to us all---reminding us of our history, our grit, our pride in honest work. It is an important, iconic symbol to this community.

Please save our historic smoke stack. Place the iconic landmark on the Hawaii Registry of Historic Places for the sake of preserving Hawaii's unique history. It's a symbol of our beginnings as a community and a reminder of our hard-working families who toiled the land in search of a better life. Mahalo.
