Save Vidant Wellness Center Gym

Pitt County needs this wellness center to be open and available to its former members. It has been a vital part of keeping people healthy. As a breast CA survivor, the Vidant wellness center provided many programs to help with people going through their own health challenges. I hope things will change and it will find a way to open again soon.

So many in the community and surrounding region--especially seniors and those with fisabilities--badly need the services of the Vidant Wellness Center. Especially now.

Active engagement in recreation and physical activity is generally accepted to have positive benefits for people in general, including those individuals with disabilities. People with disabilities may have even greater needs for physical activity and recreation pursuits than the general population because of the physiological effects of the disabilities themselves. According to Healthy People 2020, public misconceptions about individuals with disabilities have led to the underemphasis of health promotion and disease prevention activities for individuals with disabilities. Despite the benefits of recreational and leisure activity, people with disabilities face a number of obstacles to participation. Physical, environmental and attitudinal barriers make it difficult to enter fully into the activity and recreational life of a community. The person with a permanent, severe disability is often not viewed (and sometimes by himself or herself) as a candidate for exercise or recreation. Despite the recent changes in public attitudes about individuals with disabilities, gymnasiums, pools, and fitness centers are generally inaccessible and do not have appropriate equipment. The Vidant Wellness is one such exercise facility that IS accessible and able to work with individuals with disabilities. We've held many activities and programs at the Vidant Wellness Center such as Adapted SCUBA clinic, ARTS Festival, and many individuals with disabilities use the Vidant Wellness Center to maintain and improve their health and independence. Without these services, it will become even more difficult for individuals with disabilities to find accessible resources to maintain their health. I hope you will reconsider your decision. This facility is vital for the physical well-being of many of my friends, including Kristie who desperately needs it to maintain health while living life in a wheelchair. This facility is such a vital tool for the health and well-being of many people in our community.

As a caregiver i see firsthand how vital this facility is to persons with disabilities. I am certain its importance extends to the enitire community.

This wellness center is vital for people with disabilities. Truly consider what you’re taking away. I encourage you to think of the needs of people who utilize your facility to help their livelihood.

I have friends in the community with disabilities who utilized this facility regularly and have no other local options. This closure has a tremendous negative impact on their well being.

Vidant’s mission statement is this: To improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina. By closing the wellness center, Vidant’s mission statement is not being implemented. Providing health and wellness programs to eastern NC at the wellness center should be an essential component of the mission statement.

Vidant Wellness is a critical part of many people's self-care and it's closing has left a wellness gap in the community.

Please keep Vidant Wellness center open for the health and well being of our community. Thank you.

I have friends that depend on the facility for water therapy. There are many people in the community dependent upon the facility for health well being.

I know individuals who rely on Vidant Wellness for their therapeutic needs as part of their therapy because of issues related to IDD. Please do not take this valuable service away.

I sincerely hope this petition will show the decision makers that the need for this gym is vital to many people. Please reopen the gym.
