The University of Brighton management finally backed down and reversed their decision to kill Uni Info. They realized they could not just erase our community symbol without a fight. Keep your eyes open to ensure they actually follow through on this promise.

We the undersigned urge the University of Brighton management to reconsider the decision to abolish uni info.

The uni info facility is something that is very special in that it has a symbolic, as well as a technical, function.

Uni info reminds us that the university is a community. A very diverse community, and a very interesting, if occasionally annoying, community. Universities are public institutions that are communities of teaching, learning and scholarship. Unlike almost any other university in the UK, Brighton has this symbol that reminds us all that everyone - all staff at all grades - are part of the community and are essential to the functioning of the university.

For that reason we urge you to reconsider abolishing uni info. Allow us, the university, to continue to communicate with each other and to maintain that vision of being a community together.

Uni info is a valued part of our communications. To replace with bland management style messages will only breed mistrust. Why does SMT wish to stifle debate ?

while it is indeed annoying to get emails about spare tables, printer cartridges and phone-chargers, as a very part time member of staff I find uni-info absolutely essential to know what's going on in a University as large as UoB

Uni Info very useful for discussion and information sharing. The new proposal won't be the same - Rather help people set up a separate folder to divert Uni Info emails into (easy - I've done that). Then they can check when they wish.

Losing the uni info channel would be a blow to the open communications we have at Brighton. In this time of unrest and industrial action, having this channel is more important than ever. Removing it sends a very negative message to all staff.

This is a fantastic tool that links the whole of the University, when I started here I was most impressed by this and the diversity of what happens at the University. To lose this would be tragic, it is a fantastic forum for staff to share, express concerns and link up on projects.

Our discussions should not be diverted into a Sharepoint silo where we can happily talk to a blank wall, leaving the emasculated pseudo uni info free for the dissemination of corporate rah-rah messages and anti-trade union disinformation as we’ve seen proliferating recently.

UNI Info enables people to make effective contact with the university community as a whole

There are things I don't want to know about on Uni Info, but it really does not take long to delete them and I have some rules set up for things I am never going to be interested in; and I review the rules fromtime to time e.g. when going on holiday. On balance I think it is worth keeping.
