Save the West Berkeley Shellmound

As a person who's worked extensively with Native people in preserving their culture, I'm strongly behind this effort.

I am Ohlone (Carmel tribe)...help preserve our ancestors

This land must not be desecrated any further. It legitimately belongs to the Ohlone Nation and to bulldoze it and allow yet another shopping mall and apartment complex that will be available for only the wealthy is a complete travesty in so many ways. Let it remain with the People who respect it. This is their right to protect their sacred sites. If you don't understand that, then please think deeply how you would feel if the grave yards of your ancestors were bulldozed and desecrated for material wealth and trade of a nation that knows no boundaries.

The gap between the level of respect and protection shown towards white American burial sites and the almost total lack of respect shown towards the burial sites of First Peoples in this country should be a source of shame for all Americans. For those of us living as guests on unceded land, the LEAST we can do is show a basic level of RESPECT for these ancient, sacred sites by treating them as we would want the sites of our own ancestors to be treated.

The City of Berkeley's recent adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will be an empty gesture if the city does not protect this most sacred site.

Don't let greed stop a decision that literally benefits EVERYONE for generations to come! Increase the value of lives in this community! Do the right thing!

I can think of no more sacred or historically significant spot in this country.

Save and Protect All Sacred Lands

This site is a sacred place. Please do not extend any further disrespect towards the Ohlone people. Meet their demands, for this a special place where their ancestors existed before now. Please find it in your hearts not to erase their historical site. It is important for us to honor and respect ✊ the Ohlone. Evidently human remains were found, more reason to preserve this place for the Ohlone, for it is the footsteps of their ancestors. Thank you.

Honoring this sacred space fits the character of Berkeley. If we are a sanctuary city for immigrants, we should also be a sanctuary city for the hallowed memories and people of the land that has been immigrated to.

Here's where we can make a difference locally and choose a better world going forward!

Honor the Ohlone. Respect Indigenous people and protect their sacred sites in Berkeley and beyond.

Our predecessors took for themselves, without consent, land that belonged to the indigenous people that were living here and had lived here for thousands of years! The least we could do is not dig and build over this small site that is sacred to them. Please be ethical and do not disrespect the people's sacred site.
