It's a shame that the UW doesn't have a vibrant faculty club like those at other major universities. Please consider fostering a UW Foundation to support and manage the UW Club.

The UW Club was the unique gathering place for faculty and guests, social glue whose value is incalculable. I really hope the powers that be can devise a scheme to help it rise from the dead, and make it part of our post-covid resurgence!

The UW club was instrumental in department activities like faculty recruiting, mentoring lunches, happy hours for department chairs, PhD visit days, awards dinners, and more. So much of what is fun about academia has already been lost. Please bring back the UW club!

Every international scholar that I invited to the Club for meals was so overwhelmed and impressed withits envrion and view. The Club is a very unique asset to the faculty community and beyond for intellecutal exchanges and personal contacts.

The UW Club is not only an architectural master-piece, it is also an institution where the concept of 'faculty' finds manifestation as a focal institution on campus. Some of the best times of my 25+ year career at UW have been spent in it - and I beg for its restoration.

It is my sincere hope that we can keep the UW Club. When I started schooling at the UW, Red Square was a grassy knoll and there were tennis courts on upper campus with pathways and beautiful trees. Numerous other buildings have arisen, and it's understandable that we needed to look at expansion. However, letting go of the UW Club is truly heartbreaking. Since beginning my work at the UW, I have participated in and coordinated innumerable events there. Many times, I have met colleagues at the Club for impromptu meals or after-work get-togethers. It is a special place for us all, providing a much-needed respite from the frenetic pace of other event spaces. I will gladly join the Club should it re-open for us! Please keep this beautiful space, a reminder of the way things were, and a promise that we don't always have to squeeze yet another 'functional' building into a tight space.

I retired in 2021, but I do feel strongly that the UWClub played a vital role in faculty and staff life, as well as in occasional experiences of students. Before retirement, I relied on the Club many times also to entertain visiting scholars, candidates for positions, and current and prospective donors to the UW. I realize that there have been financial challenges in the past, but in my view the Club was such substantive asset to the University's mission that it is worth preserving the facility and restoring this institution to active service.

In a divided society, the UW Club could (again) be that increasingly rare space that brings people together in person from different circles. Few, if any, spaces exist on campus to serve this purpose, and none with as much beauty (this building is a gem) or lack of barriers (think exclusive department cafes.) It is not a 'nice to have'. It is an essential element of a vibrant community. Off campus guests (donors and alumni) have commented to me how great it is so see people at the club, and that they were pleasantly surprised to reconnect with people they were not expecting to see (administrators and faculty in particular). We NEED the opportunity for connections it provides: scholarly, professional, and friendly. I know of no other institution that doesn't have that space.

I have always relied on the Club to keep in touch with colleagues. I was looking forward to continuing going to lunches there as well as to special events. There is no substitute location. Please bring it back.

Before I retired I wrote to Ana Mari: The abrupt notice yesterday of the permanent closure of the UW Club seems to me a shocking disregard of faculty and staff morale. I would be amazed if the faculty and staff would accept this and I urge you to assure us that you will take whatever steps are necessary to reverse this decision.
