Save the Union Hotel in Flemington NJ

I had the pleasure of living in Flemington for a year and spending many afternoons on the porch of the Union. It would be a travesty for this building to be razed. Any developer who does not see this building as a cornerstone of a downtown renaissance is not worth his salt. Disgraceful.

So many memories here. Such an important part of Flemington's history!!!

Historical buildings like this should be saved, not torn down!

I am shocked that this is even being considered. The hotel has been a historic site for decades. How can this even be a possibility? Flemington is known for many things and the hotel is one of them. Please do not tear it down.

At a minimum, please keep the facade and the building next door (potting shed)

It's historical and what Flemington means to so many original residents of the County. It's the county seat. RESTORE at least the front portion.

Please do not destroy the history and charm this building lends to the town. Restore it instead and keep the streetscape. There are already enough places to shop. Tell Jack Cust to develop somewhere else.

How can this even be considered? The hotel should be put on the historical registry, not torn down. I've traveled in Europe where old is revered. Old castles that were bombed during WW2 and little was standing were returned to their original splendor. Wasteful Americans! We need to embrace our history, not dispose of it.

So much a historical presence, I can't imagine this landmark being destroyed. I have so many memories of this place, eating there, and reading about it's vibrant history.

Part of my family history is central to that hotel. My grandfather was the format on the Hauptman jury......trial of the century!

I am hopeful that Flemington Borough leadership will recognize the value of the Union Hotel and other historic structures as essential to the community's long term economic revitlization and environmental sustainability. Communities around the country are riding a wave of creative placemaking, embracing arts, culture and history as essential contributors to livability and the vitality of downtowns and main streets. Flemington Borough is listed on the national registry of historic places, an endorsement of the borough's special character and unique history, and the buildings slated for demolition anchor this distinction.

You can't bring history back later when it's tooooo late!!!!

The most beautiful historic towns - places where great thought was put into the look, feel and preservation of history and attempts to keep that "look" consistent are encouraged (well, and enforced) are highly coveted by residents and tourists worldwide. That's not to say that modern amenities cannot be incorporated into the interiors of any large scale renovation but once the historical element is gone, it cannot be restored. Ever. Downtown Flemington can preserve its history and wonderful look but only by careful consideration, long range planning and equally "committed to the cause" developers. The "legacy" a preservation-dedicated developer could leave behind if the Union Hotel were done "right" could impact generations, not just until the next remodel.

So sad how the board has approved retail over historical sites! Very disappointed!!!!
