What it takes up so modestly in terms of space, this facility gives back immeasurably to the UCD community in terms of the person to person communication it affords to an increasingly virtual campus.

Keep the Common Room - great ideas emerge when staff come together informally.

As a past student I enjoyed many receptions for events here. In a later capacity as Returning Officer for UCD Students’ Union the common room provided a great opportunity to meet candidates in a relaxed quiet environment.

The atmosphere of the Common Room is great - always a place of welcome to ordinary outsiders attending conferences and seminars, and something to be cultivated not closed down.

The Common Room has also had an important role to play with student events hosted in the Arts Building, providing a reception space, with no other suitable space in the building to host guests. Guests have included Taoisigh, Presidents, Nobel Laureates, Actors, Authors, UK Secretaries of State and Ambassadors, among many others. The Common Room Committee and successive Managers have always been of the utmost assistance with these events.

University research culture thrives best outside formal settings, which can be stifling. Keep the common room. It is a model of what has been best about UCD over the years

The Common Room is the social heart of UCD where staff can meet and discuss. It is disturbing that the president does not understand this.

A real highlight of recent visits to UCD to attend the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh seminars.

This is about power and control and nothing else. The two clubs can coexist.

The common room was a formative space during my time at UCD, especially during the PhD, where it was a friendly, collegial and essential space. It is - and should remain - as a resource for staff and PhD students, as well as for invited speakers and other guests to the Belfield campus.

The university must make it a priority to protect those wonderful people who work in the Common Room. They serve the community with patience, charm and good humour. They have an important place in this university and I hope their overriding needs are not neglected.

The Common Room is an essential resource for all UCD staff.

The campaign to keep the common room open seems to me to be wholly justified and fully deserving of the enthusiastic support it has received. I found the President's recent assertion that the campaigners were the ones causing reputational damage to the University particularly regrettable, anti-collegial and unworthy of his office.

The Common Room serves an important purpose for the University and it would be serious error to close it.
